This week we wanted to remind you about a way that you can talk to each other privately, appropriately named Private Messaging. This may be old hat for some of you, but others might not even know that it exists on our Community Forums.
What is it?
Private messages (PMs) are similar to instant messages online or to text messages on your phone. A private message is a user-to-user message that can only be seen by the recipient of that message. In the Verizon Community Forums, forums members can send them to other Forums members. The messages show up in your Private Message In-Box.
Where do I find private messages?
There is an icon visible for private messages on each page of the forums, as part of the header. For example, on the forums home page, just above the Verizon Community info on the right side, you will find a nice little envelope icon (right next to the Search box we talked about in the Community Beat blog last week).
How do I know I have a private message?
The default color for the Private Messages envelope is white. When you receive a private message, it turns yellow, and a message appears next to the envelope to let you know you have private messages in your inbox. Just click on the envelope, and it will take you to your private message area. From there, you can read the message, start a new message to another member, create a friends list, and manage your inbox.
There is another way to know that you have a private message. By default, you will receive an email message when you get a new private message that says, “You have received a private message in the Verizon | Forums and Blogs - Verizon Community!” as the subject line. Note that you can turn off these email notifications in My Settings – Preferences – Private Messenger.
Let’s talk publicly…
Private messages are great when you want to have a conversation that no one else will see. However, we highly encourage our members to “talk publicly” anytime the topic could benefit other Verizon Community members. We are here to help each other out!
As Community Manager, Heather strives to make sure we are keeping our members at the center of our community, listening to member needs, and working with you to improve our community!
