I am working towards a new focus for 2011, trying to use the technology on-hand to be more efficient and stay more connected. I was struck by social media guru Chris Brogan's recent blog Make Kitchen Table Companies with Cloud Plus Mobile followed soon after by a Brad McCarty blog on how smartphones have become "notification devices."
I had a PDA for while, but I kept letting the batteries run out and I'd lose all my data.
My first cell phone was a hand me down from my Mom, in the $5 a minute cell phone days, and looked like the phone you'd see John Wayne using as he was calling in an air strike in some World War II movie.
I had a Captain Kirk Flip Phone for too many missions; I got a Razr long after Razrs had stopped being cutting edge. After I got my Blitz I found out it was marketed specifically for teenage girls to text their girlfriends with.
Basically, I wanted a phone that would keep me more organized and connected. I work from home, and I work in social media and do some side consulting, so there's a lot I need to track and keep organized. I have two small children and family is number one for me, so I wanted to make a move to being connected but more mobile. The teenage text phone just wasn't cutting it for me!
Then along came Droid.
I kept my eye on Droid for many months, counting down the days to my upgrade. I read articles, watched online videos, and picked up phones in stores, narrowing it all down. I knew I wanted a Droid of some type. I originally wanted a Droid 2 for the slide out keyboard. More and more of the research and reviews I read pushed me to lean towards the Droid Incredible. That research and the fact that I got a good deal helped me make the decision to go with the Incredible.
Now, I'm no Droid expert, and I have my own way of doing things and learning. I have to learn by doing, and I can't do it all at once. I also have this aversion to instruction manuals. I really don't read them and refer to them only if there's something I can't figure out on my own.
I'm a big fan of lists and notes, so I needed to find some way to work in that mindset. I have personal Yahoo and business Yahoo accounts, so needed to coordinate them. I have a Gmail account, two blogs, and I’m active on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. I also needed to keep in touch with and track tasks for my side projects.
So, my tool was the Droid Incredible, now I had to figure out how to maximize it for me.
I quickly found there's an app for just about anything you want to do. Again, I did a lot of online research, looked into the app marketplace, and talked to some friends. Apps range from the ridiculous to the useful. There’s a free app for just about anything you want to do.
To be continued in Connectivity at the Swipe of An Icon, Episode II, how I’ve used my Droid to be more organized and efficient.
For now, how have smartphones and connectivity devices changed the way you live your life and do business?
