Happy Veteran’s Day!
Outside of knowing that today is a day to celebrate and remember our soldiers and veterans, I admit to not knowing much about this holiday. So I decided to do some digging.
The holiday itself was originally called Armistice Day and it was designated as a day to celebrate world peace. The holiday falls on November 11th because that's the day World War I- or the War to End All Wars- was declared over. In 1954, after World War II and Korea, Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veteran’s Day. Armistice Day is still celebrated throughout most of the Allied Countries that fought in WWI.
Here’s a little piece of historical trivia. From 1971 and 1977, Veteran’s Day was actually celebrated on the 4th Monday in October. Veteran’s Day was moved to comply with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act- an act that stated that all Federal holidays be celebrated on Monday. The thought was that by creating a 3 day weekend for federal employees, more people would travel and spend their money.
On this day, and every other day, I want to give a heartfelt thanks to the Veterans who have fought so bravely for our country, as well as the soliders who continue to fight today. Thanks to you, and your families, for your dedication, your support and your sacrifices. They do not go unnoticed or unappreciated- America wouldn’t be the country it is today without you.
