Under New (Community) Management

by on ‎10-25-2013 05:20 AM

Change is good and Verizon is making good changes by introducing new faces to the Forum.  I am stepping down as Community Manager, but I am very pleased to introduce you to Chris (ChrisB_VZ) and Greg (ggoldman_VZ) who are taking over. Don't worry - they will continue to embrace the Community Forum purpose and spirit and will keep things running as smoothly as ever!  You may notice that this blog is quieter than usual as they get their footing, but stay tuned for new updates, announcement and more soon.

Free On Demand Marathon

by ‎09-19-2013 08:11 AM - edited ‎09-19-2013 08:14 AM

FODMarathon.jpgI’ve only noted a million times here that I’m a fan of movies.  But I’m also a fan of the written word. I blog here and I have two personal blogs as well. I love words and puns – the English language is one of my favorite things to play with. So it figures that I absolutely love our new promotion for the Free On Demand Marathon on our Verizon FiOS Facebook page as they are Word Libs. You know, those car-ride staples from your childhood when you had to write a random noun/adjective/verb/phrase into a story to try to come up with the wackiest story you could? Well, we’ve taken that to an all new level, allowing you to re-write some fun passages from your favorite TV shows like The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, Ducky Dynasty & more!

Even if words aren’t your thing, you can still take full advantage of our Free on Demand marathon, running from 9/18 through 9/22.

Movie Night!

by on ‎09-13-2013 06:18 PM

RBi.jpgBefore we had kids, my husband and I went out to the movies all the time. I’m talking 1-2 times a week at a minimum. We loved the whole experience- the buttery popcorn, the huge, reclining seats, the previews and the surround sound that shook your whole body when things exploded. Then we had kids. And while kids are awesome, they also ruin** a lot of things. Like going to the movies, what with their screaming and crying and inability to stay out late.  Fast forward 7 years and while my kids are old enough to go to the movies, we’re restricted to the G and PG rated flicks.  So the Husband and I are forced to recreate our movie date nights at home after the kiddos go to bed.

Thankfully in the past 7 years renting movies isn’t what it used to be- and now thanks to Redbox Instant by Verizon it’s getting a lot better! For $8 a month, you get 4 DVD credits a month plus streaming so you don’t even need to leave your home to watch your favorite movie

In Remembrance

by on ‎09-11-2013 11:26 AM

AmericanFlag.jpgWhen I was a kid, I remember my parents remarking how quickly time passes. How you blink and it’s a year later.  And, as a kid, I didn’t get that. The time between Christmas and my birthday (6 months) seemed like an eternity and years? Well- a year went by at a snail’s pace. But now I’m 35 and 9/11 was 12 years ago- 12 years that seem like they’ve gone by in a blink of an eye.

On the 10th anniversary of 9/11 I wrote a blog post about where my husband and I were on that gorgeous September morning. It’s still a little surreal to me, especially since my husband has been asked over the past few years to speak at local middle schools about being in the White House on 9/11.  Some of the kids he’s spoken to weren’t even born when 9/11 happened- for them it’s just is a page in a history book, not something they lived through.

Life Hacks- Trust Me, You Need Them

by on ‎08-28-2013 11:50 AM

TrippTyler.jpgHave you all ever heard the phrase “Life Hacks” before? According to Wikipedia, “Life hacking refers to any productivity trick, shortcut, skill, or novelty method to increase productivity and efficiency, in all walks of life; in other words, anything that solves an everyday problem in a clever or non-obvious way.”  Basically, they are really neat ways to make your life just a little bit easier.

Verizon is pleased to introduce you to Tripp and Tyler. These guys are the masters of life hacks- both Verizon related and non-Verizon related. Want to know how to erase permanent marker from a dry erase board? Tripp and Tyler can teach you! Want to know what button on your FiOS remote to press when you want to know what your kids were really watching on the TV before you came in the room? They know that too.

Disney.jpgI may have mentioned this a few million times, but I have two little kids who are 5 and 7.  And while I set some strict limits, my kids watch TV.  It’s something I put on when my husband and I want to sleep late (you know, until 7 am) or when I need to keep them occupied on a rainy afternoon while I’m trying to get dinner ready.  And 9 times out of 10, when they watch TV, they watch one channel- Disney XD.  It’s home to some of their favorite shows, including Phineas & Ferb, Jessie and Good Luck Charlie, and I think they’ve seen each episode more than once.  And while I’ll deny it if ever asked, I may have found myself watching what trouble Phineas and Ferb get into while my kids were in bed (that show is hysterical).

Get Turbo Charged & Win!

by on ‎07-16-2013 12:05 PM

Turbo.jpgWe live in the country- there are corn fields across the street and cows up the road.  There are also snails. Lots of snails and slug.  Every morning, when the kids and I head out to their camp, we see the tracks they’ve made slowly across the dew-covered front deck. Honestly, given the path they take, I think our snails drink a bit too much while we’re sleeping.  That may also explain why those snails move so slow!  But what if a snail suddenly could go fast? Faster than a car? That’s the premise behind Turbo, the new movie from Dreamworks.  Turbo is a snail who miraculously attains the power of super-speed, and with the help of his friends, tries to win the Indy 500.

Turbo starts in theaters on July 17th-  but we want to give you a private screening for 100 people! To win, here’s what you need to do...

How are you celebrating?

by ‎07-04-2013 06:30 AM - edited ‎07-04-2013 06:31 AM

1218723_24078185.jpgI love the 4th of July! Admittedly, I love all the food and what better way to celebrate my freedom of choice than overindulging in all of those grilled delicacies. I have such fond childhood memories of Independence Day. Parades, sack races, hot dogs, ice cold lemonade, fireflies and evening fireworks. Never mind the few ants that would show up for their piece of the American dream at the family picnic. What’s your favorite 4th of July food? Maybe I’ll take your suggestion and add it to the menu.

True Blood is Back & I'm Thrilled

by on ‎06-20-2013 05:49 AM

TrueBlood.jpgA few years ago, my husband and I got in an argument.  It was one of those marital spats where you verbally unleash all the minor things that have been bothering you for quite some time- you know, the kind of fight all the magazines / talk show hosts tell not to have but you do anyhow because you’re human and after 15 years of being together, things irritate you. Anyhow- one of the “insults” my husband lobbed at me was “Why don’t you read any real books?! All you do is read about vampires  and fairies and other useless crap.”  To which I replied, “Yes, and I love them AND I love watching TV shows about the same things.”

Hi, my name is Heather, I’m 34 years old and I’m a supernatural addict.  That said, it should be no surprise at all that I’ve been a True Blood fan from the minute it aired...

Happy Father's Day

by on ‎06-14-2013 12:36 PM

FathersDay.jpgThis Sunday is Father’s Day- one of my favorite days of the year! Odd right, since I’m the mom?  I try to make sure my husband knows he’s valued every day, but this is the one day he allows himself to totally kick back which makes for a fun day.  Lawn needs mowing? Eh- it can wait.  House a little messy? Who cares! Instead we have a morning that includes a big breakfast and mass and then a day of whatever my husband wants. I’m hopeful this year we’ll spend it at the pool or at a local state park, but who knows with the weather Mother Nature has been handing us.

If the weather is crummy, it may be a day full of laziness in front of the TV, which I’m OK with!  Here’s a list of some of my favorite movies about fatherhood:

GoT Recap & Fun Entertainment Links

by on ‎06-10-2013 12:10 PM

GoT.jpgAre you guys obsessed with Game of Thrones? I admit, I’m not*, but many of my co-workers are. Every meeting on Monday starts with a “Did you see it last night??” while someone else shrieks out “Don’t tell me- I DVR’d it!” Well, today is the last day of hearing that for a while because GoT thrones officially ended its 3rd season last night.  So, did you watch it? What did you think? Did it live up to the shock and awe of The Rains of Castamere? Could anything have lived up to the infamous Red Wedding? Read our recap here and let me know what you think.

While we’re indulging in our love for all things entertainment, let me share a few more links with you:

Vote for the Forum's All Stars

by ‎06-07-2013 10:33 AM - edited ‎06-10-2013 09:20 AM

I’m so happy to announce we are starting up our All Star Program again!  This program allows us to float up the best-of-the-best and bring them to your attention.  All Star nominees are a group of users who currently aren’t Community Leaders, but are helping out all over the Forums by sharing their extensive knowledge and skills.

We gathered the list of nominees by reviewing everything from kudos to accepted solutions to overall helpfulness in the Forums. But at the end of the day, we don’t want to decide who the Forum All Stars are- we want *YOU* to tell us who you want by taking a poll.  Before we get into the selection, we’d like you to see who the nominees are. Drum roll please...

picnictable_lowres.jpgI love Memorial Day weekend for many, many reasons but mostly because it’s the unofficial start to summer!  Never mind that it’s sleeting outside my window right now and my fireplace is on to keep me warm- it’s the start of summer, darn it! To celebrate, we’re heading to two BBQs, one baseball game and a hike at one of our local state parks.  With two little kids and a crazy schedule, we often do a lot of things on the fly, so I use my phone a lot.  So to help with the start of summer, I’ve downloaded a few apps to help me along.

First, I got a few BBQ apps.  My favorite right now is the Webber Grill app- recipes, timers, videos and more all in one. My family will eat very, very well this summer! I also downloaded an app for NY State Parks.  There are apps for the state parks in almost every state- each is different, but most of the ones I saw have ways to search for a park by the activity you want to do or location, park hours, directions and other fun facts...

Verizon Loves Iron Man!

by ‎04-30-2013 11:14 AM - edited ‎04-30-2013 11:15 AM

IM3.jpgI have a confession to make. I cannot wait for Iron Man 3 to come out this week.  Can.Not.Wait.  I don’t fit the typical superhero movie demographic- I’m in my mid-30’s, married and never a fan of the genre. But I am married to a fan and have somehow managed to give birth to an uber-fan who geeks out over all these things. Now, my son is only 6, so he’s never seen the Iron Man movies* but that doesn’t stop him from being so excited about this new flix.  Which, in turn, makes me super excited.  So I’m doing what any good parent would do- I’m getting a babysitter, having a date night with my husband and making my son super jealous by going to the movie without him!

Since I am such a fan, I was even more excited to see all the things Verizon is doing around Iron Man 3.  Have you checked...

Now on FiOS: 80's Flashback

by ‎04-02-2013 12:52 PM - edited ‎04-03-2013 04:34 AM

NOF.jpgHi All! I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kelly this week. Kelly manages our Verizon FiOS Facebook page - can you think of a more fun job? As part of Kelly’s job, she recently made some major changes to our Now on FiOS tab which we wanted to share with you.

Heather: Hi Kel! Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me! Before we dive into the updated Now on FiOS area, can you tell me what we can find on the Verizon FiOS Facebook page in general?

Kelly: Hey Heather- I’m so excited to share all this info with you!  Our Verizon FiOS Facebook page serves a lot of purposes. First, you can see what’s new on FiOS- everything from offers for new and existing customers to the latest movies we’ve got On Demand. You can see what sweepstakes we’re running- right now we have a lot of giveaways with Iron Man 3! We are also really psyched for the new Game of Thrones season starting, so there is a lot of information about that.  Secondly, it’s another support avenue. Our users can come here and get help with any issues they have be having with their FiOS service.

Check 'em out: How-To Support Videos

by on ‎03-19-2013 05:35 PM

Question_Mark.jpgHave you ever taken any of those tests that tell you what kind of learner you are? In very simple terms, the theory says that people fall into three categories- visual learners, auditory learners and/or kinesthetic (or tactical) learners.   I’m a visual learner- I learn best when information is shown to me in one form or another. I love a good slide show- and I also love how-to videos! Which is why these new support videos are right up my alley.

Our Support team combed through the Forums, our Support page, call center records and anything else they could get their hands on to come up with a list of the some of the most common questions Verizon receives.

Broken_Heart.jpgWe typically think of Valentine’s Day as a day just between you and your loved one. In the past secret letters were tucked under pillows and flowers were carefully picked out at the local flower shop.  Today, those gestures are replaced by texts, online cards and tele-bouquets.

A study by McAfee shows that 35% of Americans plan to send sexy or romantic photos to their partners via email, text, and social media on Valentine’s Day. The same study reveals that once broken up, 28% of people regret sending photos/videos to their significant other.

Happy Groundhog Day!

by on ‎02-01-2013 05:36 PM

WinterScene.jpgThe other day my 4 year old came home and told me there was an awesome holiday coming up! It was a holiday where they pull a rat out of a hole and he tells you if it’s going to keep snowing.  After I got done laughing, I explained to her that no, it wasn’t a rat, it was a groundhog named Phil and that we don’t pull it out of the ground, he lives in a tree stump. And, sadly, he doesn’t talk, people around him just look to see if he casts a shadow.  But really- does that make any more sense than my daughter’s interpretation? Let’s face it, Groundhog Day is an odd holiday no matter how you slice it.

So I did some digging (get it?!) to figure out how this strange little holiday came to be.  Did you know that Groundhog Day is actually based on the German tradition of holding a hedgehog or badger out in the sun on Candlemas? German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania...

In-Home Agent on FiOS TV

by on ‎12-21-2012 07:48 AM

iha_logo.JPGHappy Friday, all!  Just in time for the holidays, I wanted to remind you of a little present Verizon brought you. A while back, we made some changes on our Interactive Media Guide (IMG) on FiOS TV that will allow you to do a lot more with In-Home Agent.  This is a great news for you because instead of having to mess around with Customer Support, you’ll now have many of the tools you need to fix a variety of issues that pop up at your fingertips!  And let’s face it, anything we can do at home in our PJs without having any wait time at all is always a good thing.

Boxing Pic 1.jpgMadison Square Gardens has seen its share of great boxing matchups, and the battle between Austin Trout and Miguel Cotto on December 1st was right up there with other classic bouts held in the historical venue.

From the moment it was announced that SHOWTIME would be carrying the fight between the defending champ Trout and Miguel Cotto, there was a buzz about this matchup. Trout entered the fight undefeated, and Cotto was a fan-favorite in NYC.

It was evident during the weeks building to the fight that each man was preparing for a battle. SHOWTIME’s All Access followed Trout and Cotto as they balanced training for a prize with day-to-day family and professional challenges. One thing was evident: both fighters expected to win.

FiOS TV Welcome Screen

by ‎12-12-2012 08:37 AM - edited ‎12-13-2012 07:32 AM

Welcome Screen VHO 1.jpg I told you she’d be back- and here she is! Today I’m talking to Emily, our resident FiOS VOD Product Manager, about the addition of Verizon FiOS’s new Welcome Screen.

Heather: Emily, thanks so  much for talking to me again!  What can you tell me about this Welcome Screen?

Emily: Hey Heather! The Welcome Screen is this awesome dashboard that lets users see the latest and greatest on FiOS TV- it’ll be the first thing you see when you turn on your set-top box.  Let me break it down for you.

The Welcome Screen features the following:

1. Opt-Out of Welcome Screen: if you’d rather not see this screen, you can select that here

2. TV:  this takes you to the channel of your choice

3. Top Selling Movies (updated every time the set-top box powers on): this goes to the Top Selling folder in the VOD menu...

TV2.jpgWe have some great enhancements coming to our Video on Demand area of FiOS TV. To learn more, I talked with Emily- she’s the FiOS Video On Demand Product Manager and has been instrumental in working on these great updates.

Heather: Hi Emily! So let’s get to it- tell me, what changes are coming to the Video on Demand world?

Emily: Hey Heather! We have 4 big changes coming:

The first is the Buy 3 / Get 1 FlexView Rental On Us offer.  Users who rent or purchase three FlexView or Video on Demand movies within the same calendar month will receive a free FlexView Rental! There are obviously some restrictions- first, you can only get one free rental per month, the free rental must be redeemed within 7 days of your 3rd movie purchase or rental,  and finally, TV Shows, PPV Events, Adult Content and Subscription Purchases do not count towards a free FlexView rental....

Happy Halloween!

by on ‎10-31-2012 10:53 AM

Halloween_small.jpg Happy Halloween!

I have to admit, Halloween’s never been my favorite holiday. I love the candy- who doesn't? But the dressing up part just about kills me. I fully admit to not being creative enough to ever think of a good costume and it stresses me out so much that I can't enjoy the holiday.  And scary stuff? Forget it. I'm more apt to burst into tears and run screaming in the opposite direction then I am to enjoy anything meant to scare me.

Nerd. VzNerd.: My Brush with Bond

by ‎10-09-2012 06:11 PM - edited ‎10-09-2012 06:14 PM

Epix pic1.jpg“Nerd. VzNerd.” That’s how I imagined introducing myself to many of the stars attending EPIX’s New York City premiere of Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007. While I didn’t get to use my silly wit in person with many of the celebrities, I put it to use on Twitter by live tweeting.

With beads of sweat dripping from my forehead in anticipation, I witnessed a few dozen celebrities stroll down the red (actually black) carpet. Each one seemed eager to watch the documentary featuring one of cinema history’s most popular secret agents, James Bond. They were also pretty chatty in discussing Bond’s influence on pop culture, and sharing their favorite 007 moments.

Boardwalk Empire Season 3 Premiere (Watch it For Free!)

by ‎09-11-2012 02:09 PM - edited ‎09-11-2012 05:19 PM

RedCarpet 2.jpg It felt like a scene from Woody Allen’s A Midnight In Paris, except in this version, Atlantic City took center stage. As the doors opened, I was greeted by the sound of clinging glasses, crooning jazz, and the year 1923.

The night started with my first trip down the red carpet before the screening of the season 3 premiere episode of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. If you’re not familiar with the show, think of it as the dapper love child of The Sopranos and Goodfellas, raised by its uncle, Steve Buscemi.

Usually when I watch my Sunday shows, I’m in sweats with my non-skid socks on. However that night, I traded it all in for a dress and heels. It’s not every day I get to time travel with the cast of one of my favorite shows.

A Night Out in So Cal

by on ‎07-24-2012 06:22 PM

P7091352.JPG In Southern California people know how to live in the fast lane. Whether it’s surfing near the Santa Monica Pier, or roller-skating down the boardwalk near Venice Beach, So Cal residents know how to enjoy the beauty of the Golden State.  Verizon FiOS knows its fans love everything fast and recently launched Quantum – the fastest Internet speed available!

FiOS set-up interactive events in some of the hottest locations like  Santa Monica demonstrating Quantum speed through an interactive game “A Night Out in So Cal.”

Happy Presidents' Day- Maybe.

by on ‎02-17-2012 12:45 PM

PresidentsDay.jpg This upcoming Monday is Presidents’ Day.  While talking about it with my kids earlier today, I realized I didn’t know much about the holiday.  Since I don’t want to seem ill-informed in front of my kids (they’ll figure that out soon enough), I decided to educate myself.  I had no idea just how interesting the story would turn out to be!

I thought Presidents’ Day was a Federal Holiday that was created to celebrate both Presidents Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays.  Turns out there are two things wrong with that sentence. First, the holiday isn’t technically even called Presidents’ Day, and second, poor President Lincoln’s birthday isn’t commemorated federally at all!

Meet & Greet with Smith6612

by ‎02-10-2012 07:25 AM - edited ‎02-10-2012 07:26 AM

1377655_circuit_board.jpg As our community continues to grow, I’m going to try to highlight a new community member a few times a month. This week, I got to talk to Smith6612- one of our Community Leaders and most active users on the board.

Here is what he had to say:

Heather_VZ: Hi Smith6612- happy Friday! Thanks so much for talking to me this week!  Let’s start with the basics- how long have you been a Verizon customer and what Verizon services do you have?
Smith6612: I've been a Verizon customer for ages. I don't remember how long I've had Voice service via a POTS line specifically under the Verizon name- but I do know it dates back to the days of this area being serviced by what was known as the AT&T Monopoly before it was split up in the mid 1980s and became Bell Atlantic!

As far as other Verizon services go, I have had HSI (formerly DSL) service since roughly 2005, when I subscribed to basic 768kbps/128kbps. I still have the same services, POTS and DSL today, all I’ve changed is the speed of the HSI, which was updated to 1Mbps three years ago.
