Actiontec password rejection

Hey Folks, @ 192.168.1.1, I enter  the user name as: admin

For the password, I enter the serial number of the router (14 numbers/letters)

I read the FAQs, I know the funky three button display pops every time you execute a keystroke.

I can't log on, even when I disable my security software and firewall.

What am I doing wrong? This all came about as I tried to connect a BluRay DVD player wirelessly, and can't find a wireless network installed, can't even find the router listed in Win XP's Device Manager utility.

My net performace is fine, never has been any problems.  Thanks in advance for any thoughts.  Mac

I don't understand. Are you not able to login to the router? Have you done this before? The default password as far as I know is "password1" or "password". See this thread: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/Actiontec-M1424-WR-login-where-can-I-get-the-User-Name-an...

Had you changed the default password on the router to something other than "password1"?

VZ only changed the password to the serial number on routers that had a default password of "password" or "password1".

If it was changed, be sure to enter any letters in the serial number as upper case.  The password field is case sensitive.

If VZ did not change the password, you should be able to logon as before.

If you still can't logon, do a hard reset on the router, which will reset it to factory defaults.

The factory default password is "password".  You will be prompted to change it the first time you log in.

Thanks To All Who Replied,  I got an email from VZ saying my router's PW was being changed to it's SN. I assume the FiOS installer used the default admin/password set up, or admin/password1. I try admin/and the serial number with both case sensitive and not on the PW. All forms get rejected. Why doesn't the !@#$%^ Actiontec router even show up in WinXP's Device Manager? I guess I will have to do the modem reset to gain access to the modem control panel, but why I can't find it anywhere in XP as being attached to my PC is a mystery to me. I have been mucking about in Microsoft products before there any GUI interfaces. How many of you are old enough to remember the wild celebrations when MS piggy-backed "Workforce For Windows 3.11" on the back of MS-DOS? That, and 2400 baud modems is how far back I go, one step after the land line phone hand unit cradle you see Matthew Broderick using in "War Games". Man, I am getting old...   Mac

The router won't show up as a device on your XP machine device manager because it's not a device on that machine.  However your machine will show up as a device connected to the router and also you can see if you are connected to the router by running a command prompt and seeing what your ip address is - will be 192.168.1.x where x is some number greater than 1.  You'll als see it if you run tracert to somewhere e.g. tracert www.google.com will show you that your router is the first hop away from your machine.

Some of us remember when there were no pc's.  In fact some of us remeber when computers had tubes and why computer central memory was called core memory.

At Georgia Tech in 1967, I was witness to a demo of a miraculous new piece of equipment that could send data all the way across campus at a speed faster than 99% of all typists could type, 30 baud. This acoustic modem demonstration took 5 tries before it finally worked. The device could fit inside of a large suitcase.

I was also told by the FT that my password was the serial number. It wouldnt work so I just hit the reset button to reset it to its defaults and programmed in a new user name and password. I too needed to access the control panel so that it  would see my network printers that had fixed ip addresses.

... ah yes ... when bugs were fought with Raid and a memory leak required a Hazmat team to clean it up!
