My laptop is speedy but the new desktop card is S-L-O-W. It's only used occasionally so it's OK but if I had to use it daily, I'd probably lose my marbles.

Ok so if its a laptop, I see why you would want to go wireless. As for the type of card, you can use and USB adaptor that is compatible with your OS. But if it was me getting it I would get a 802.11n that is able to get 802.11g, and most will. It will make sure you will be compatible when you switch over the compatible 802.11n protocol.

Not sure if this helps at all, but under the configuration browser interface I seem to recall there being a setting (Advanced Wireless?) to set the router to accept g and older versions. If it's not set to be in mixed mode, then that could explain why the USB wireless adapter isn't working. Anyway, again, not sure if that helps.

The ActionTec routers only support 54Mbps over wireless.

Thanks CharlesH. Wasn't aware of that. Strike my suggestion then 🙂
(Unrelated: Is there a newer/different router - I have the ActionTec M1424-WR, too that handles faster speeds? 802.11n?)

CharlesH, doesn't the xtremeG router support > 54mps in 'turbo' mode. Haven't tried it yet, but plan to.
On a side not, I did purchase I a new dlink rangebooter g usb adapter, working fine at 54mps.

You can setup a 2nd wireless router a 802.11 router to get faster speeds. You do not need to use the fios router for wireless. I picked up a belkin n1 from amazon for a good price and set mine up that way.

Yup, you can always pick up another router and "piggyback" off of ours (we do not support this however) or if your ONT has a ethernet connection, you can just not use our router. In response to TimSykes and ubrgeek, I was talking as far as routers provided by Verizon, but of course you can buy your own and it will usually work. =P
