FIOS 802.11n??

I got FIOS installed about a year ago and Verizon gave me a ActionTec M1424WR which is 802.11g.  I was sort of surprised they didn't give me an 802.11n router.  Does anyone know if it would be possible to get one from them?

alternatively...I happen to have my own 802.11n router ...can I just use that one instead?

You do not have to use a verzion provided router. If you are comfortable troubleshooting your own issues many here would recommend using a differnet router than the one VZ provides. It may be worthwhile to call VZ and request the MI424WR REV I if you do not want to use your own.

You need the 75Mbps or above plan to get the M1424WR Rev I free. And then it will depend on the customer rep you talk to and availability.

With FiOS you can use your own router as a secondary router.  But you can not use it instead of the Verizon router.  That will enable you to take advantage of your router's "n" capability.  The following link provides step by step instructions on how to set it up.

That's not strictly true.  If you do not have FIOS-TV, there is no reason you can't use your own router as primary.

If you have FIOS-TV, you can place the Actiontec as secondary but you do give up some features (remove DVR access, on-screen caller-id).  A full list of trade-offs is here:

you could also just disable the wi-fi on the router and buy a 802.11n access point.

much less headaches than trying to run multiple routers.

one thing to keep in mind is wi-fi will run at the speed of the slowest device, so if you have any g devices it's going to run at g speeds anyway unless you get a dual band router/access point.
