Gaming connection

While gaming the connection fluctuates and sometimes causes the game to "lag". The only thing that is wireless on the game is my controller. If I plug the controller in there is no difference. I am playing Mod Warfare on an Xbox 360 console; I have fios 20/5  with an Actiontec router. How do I determine if it the failing connections are from Verizon or Xbox?

Odd are it is neither Verizon or the Xbox. It is in the nature of Wi-Fi Internet access.

There are two basic possiblities.

If you haven't secured your Wireless network (we can argue the merits of WEP versus WPA some other time), you need too. If you haven't there is the possiblity that someone outside your house is using your wireless network. I actually had that happen when I lived in an Apartment. In the logs I found a MAC address I didn't recognize. So if you haven't secured your wireless network, that is step 1.

The big problem with wireless is that the band used for 802.11b/g is shared with a number of other applications, which can (and do) interfere with each other, forcing re-transmission, or dropped connections.  There are only a few things you can try to improve your wireless connection.

Try a different Channel, 1, 6 and 11 are all valid. Try them out one at a time and see if it makes any difference.

If you game controller supports dual band  802.11n, you may be able to go out and buy a dual band 802.11n wireless access point. There are far few users of the 5 Ghz band, than the 2.4 Ghz band used by 802.11b/g Wi-Fi.
