Help - trying to change SSID and password

I would like to change my Verizon Fios network name and password from the factory settings but I am experiencing the following problem:

Keep in mind that I have a Dell laptop.

1. I go into the Verizon Online portal to change the settings, and successfully enter the new SSID in the box and click "Apply" (not the problem)

2. Then, my wireless network disconnects. The name changes to what I just entered in the list of available networks, but there is a red "X" next to it and I am unable to connect. The message says that the settings entered do not match those configured for the network.

It seems like my computer refuses to accept the new network name and password, so even though I am able to change the network name and password, the computer is remembering the old and will not connect to the new.

Any suggestions?

Once you change the password for your wireless, you get kicked off, because you no longer have the right credentials.

So after you do that, you have to reconnect, if simply clicking on it doesn't produce a password prompt where you can type the new one, then follow these instructions.

How to remove the existing wireless network profile in Windows 7

Suitable for: Wireless

Step 1
Click Start->Control Panel, Select Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center

Step 2
In the task list, please choose Manage wireless networks.

Step 3
In the Network table, please select the existing profiles and click Remove.

Step 4
You may see a warning dialog box, just click OK.

Step 5
Then please go back to Network and Sharing Center and choose Change adapter settings -> right click Wireless Network Connection -> click Connect/Disconnect.

Step 6
Click the refresh button to view available wireless networks. Highlight the network which you want to connect, double click it or click Connect button.

sound like your stored password is wrong

for win 7

  1. Open Network and Sharing Center.

  2. In the Tasks pane, click Manage wireless networks.

  3. Right-click the connection you want to delete, and then click Remove network.

  4. In the Manage Wireless Networks - Warning dialog box, click OK.

for win 8

In the list of availble networks, right click on the network and select forget this network.

Then reconnect to network. You will be prompted for the password.

It would be much simpler if you connected your computer to the router with an ethernet cable temporarily while you change the wireless information. When you are finished disconnect the wire and enter the new wireless info into you computer and you should be online.

Presumably by the Verizon Online Portal you mean address 192.168.1.1  ??

After you change the ssid on the router reboot it - i.e. power it off and on

then go into network, manage wireless connections on you laptop and select the connection you were using and say forget this connection

Then scan for wireless connections and select the one that you made the new name for and enter the credentials as they were for the old name

Should work fine then.
