Is Advanced FIOS Modem Router Worth the Cost

I am three years into my Verizon FIOS contract and still have my original Actiontec 1424 Modem Router. I have FIOS quantum 75/35 and usually have three devices connected (ipad 3, iPhone 5 and Windows 7 PC.). For those who have upgraded to the Verizon FIOS "Advanced" modem/router, can you tell me if it was worth the $104.99 cost to upgrade? For example, did webpages load faster? If you had any dead spots in your home, did the new router resolve those? Thx for your input. Ken

Just go and buy a cheap wireless-n access point of your choice and connect it to your network (by wire) - far cheaper, you can find them for around $20

The only people who will really benefit with the rev. i in my opinion are those with the older g band routers and want better wireless speeds or have 150 mbps or above internet plans. Also, those who want better security if their routers can't have wpa2.

There are far better routers on the market that can be used, but the rev. i is an improvement over the older fios routers.

I personally got the rev. i because I had an old g band router, wanted n and I only wanted 1 router in my house, not 2.

Pages dont load any different, but I did get better range and faster speeds because I went from g band to n.

If your current router is already n band then you won't see much difference. As said in the above post an access point might work better for you if your router is already n band.

A tip if you still want a rev i and dont want to spend $104 is check out ebay. People are listing new or barely used ones all of the time.

VIAFAX. I am unfamiliar with the wireless n access points but will check it out. THX

BEETLEJUICE. My actiontec is an MI1424 WR. Pretty sure it is wireless g. If I want to find the new router on ebay, what is the model number I am searching for? Is the set up basically plug and play, or is there more complexity involved?

You're looking for an Actiontec MI424-WR revision I router.

Make sure that it's a Verizon branded rev. I, as there are other rev. I routers out there (Actiontec OEM and Frontier).

If you're looking for an inexpensive Wireless Access Point, you might look at the TrenddNet Easy-N Extender.

Do you know what rev. number your router is? E? F? If you search on eBay for one just search fios router and look for rev i. All pics will have the red band on the router itself. I don't recommend putting rev i in the search because some people don't put rev i in their title so your results won't be as good. This is from personal experience. Its better to just search fios router and look for the router. Its pretty much plug and play which makes things easy. Remove the old router and plug the new one in. All you have to do is sign into the router and change the security code if wanted and change any other settings you might want to.

Doesn't need to be a wireless access point only, you can use a regular router that has wireless-n capabilities,

Re: Is Advanced FIOS Modem Router Worth the Cost

There are two reasons why you MAY want to upgrade to a wireless N router with reguards to the wireless devices you are using.

1. speed, given your situation with only 3 wireless devices I doubt you are going to see much performance differences from your current router to the wireless N. Yes the wireless N is faster but are you really going to use all that speed? 25-50 MBPS to 1 device is plenty to do videos and games etc.

2. Distance - if your current router is not getting wifi signal in all areas you want it to then it is possible wireless N may improve on this. However sometimes wifi signal is blocked by materials in a house and that will happen with wireless N and well as wireless G devices.

would I pay 104.99 for it? not if I was you only have 3 wireless devices, I don't know what the size of your home is though.

Re: Is Advanced FIOS Modem Router Worth the Cost

I just hooked up my quantum router which I ordered solely to achieve better range.  There is absolutely NO benefit in range that I can see.
