Los Angeles Servers Slow

I live in Hemet, California. I have Verizon FiOS Internet service with the 15/5 package. Yesterday I noticed slow Internet speeds while browsing the Web. I did a few tests and I was coming up with very low download speeds between 1 and 3 Mbps. I power cycled my router, did a release and renew, I even had a Verizon tech change my IP. Nothing improved the issue. I continued to run tests and try and to resolve the problem. Finally I noticed that while selecting the server at several different speed tests, I could get dramatically different results. I realized that any Los Angeles server would return the slow speeds, while any other server, even those outside my state, would return normal speeds.

So now the question is, why am I getting slow speeds only from Los Angeles servers? Any ideas?

Thanks to everyone for the responses and suggestions. As one commenter speculated, the problem has corrected it's self. I now am able to reach normal speeds from all Los Angeles servers that previously returned the offending results.

typically if you can get good results from everywhere but particular servers, then it's a problem specifically with those servers.

Try the dreamhost server at http://www.speedtest.net

and also try the http://speedtest.verizon.net la server

Post those results.

I get results between 1 and 3 Mbps at Speedtest.net from Los Angeles based servers (Dreamhost etc.).

I cannot get results from the Verizon test for less than 75Mbps. The test for 100Mbps and above gives me good reults between 10 - 12 Mbps. I suspect that the West CA server they use may not in fact be based in Los Angeles, but elsewhere in SoCal such as San Diego.

Additionally I have tested at Speakeasy.net/speedtest and get similar results, continuting the trend of low Los Angeles server speeds, and dramatically better speeds from anywhere else.

Also, do note that I receive good ping responses, ranging from 7 to 9 ms, no matter which server I test from.

That's a IL based test, right? Interesting enough I was only able to get a 4.5 Mbps result for download (incoming). Can I ask if there is an particular signifigance to this particular testing site? As a side not I was able to get optimal speed from the Santa Cruz, CA server listed on that site.

well it's starting to sound like there may be a routing issue in la.

The verizon test site excludes non verizon servers from the test.  So it is a pure verizon network test.

You are getting bad results to literally every other LA test site no matter who what and where, and so that indicates there might be a routing issue.

you should do some traceroutes, or download and run WIN MTR and post those results.

That would help find where the problem might be.

How do I run a traceroute?

No problem. What server address am I running the trace on?
