Network painfully slow

My network connections have become painfully slow to not working at all. Most recently I tried to run the Verizon bandwidth test, and I'm still waiting for it to start. I often get a "web site not found" message, then retry and get a successful connection.
Any suggestions??

What router do you have and what speed plan are you subscribed to?
First try resetting the router (write down any custom settings before holding down the reset pin hole for 15 seconds).
