Winows 7 .

all is fine with old router.

Now i have new service with  FIOS and new router and the two PCs

can work in home group

But i use an application were they connect with port 28000 AND THEY

CANT SEE EACH OTHER. this connection doesnt work.

btw they do not go out through the internet.

SEEMS ROUTER BLOCKS THE Ports

or prevents two PC from talking to each other.

all internet service works otherwise.

BYW its not my PC firewall i took it down same problem

any ideas ?

Are you able to successfully ping between the 2 machines?

Since the router change have you tried setting up the homegroup "fresh"?

Normally ports are important when information needs to get out onto the internet. Are you sure this application doesn't require internet access? in which case you need to open that port on the router.

The router does NOT block ports on the LAN.  Something else is going on.

Do you have a simple switch?

Can you connect both PCs to the switch?

Can you communicate between the two PCs when connected to the switch?

You'll need to assign each PC a static IP address to do this since you will no longer be connected to the router's DHCP server.

My guess is that a Windows firewall setting has changed.   Did windows prompt you that you're now connected to a different network (192.168.1.x) than before and ask you if you wanted to trust/connect to  that network?

i have a problem when the two are connected through the FIOS router/modem (Actiontec)  but not through a Netgear router. They are in the same Home Homegroup amd i can share files. The Application does Not use the internet. Actually the app is Synergy . use can use one keyboard, one mouse with 2 PC's

Don't know about synergy but RDP works just fine under windows 7

You'll need to enable remote access on the headless machines (the machines with no KB and Mouse) - right click computer and select properties, there's a remote tab there.

On the machine with the KB and Mouse just run mstsc.exe and in the window that comes up enter the ip address of the headless machine you're trying to run
