Router Confusion - Rev "F" vs Rev "I"

When I recently upgraded my service, the Verizon Rep insisted that I needed a new modem/router to full advantage of the faster service.  I trusted the person and bought a new router for $79.99.  I was shocked to see that the new router was almost identical to the one I had already.  Can anyone tell me if the new router is faster?  I don't see any improvement in service.  Verizon has been unable to answer this question.

Old Router: M1424WR rev. F (Fios Router)

Speed: LAN Ethernet 10/100 MBPS auto-sencing

Wireless 802.11n

New Router: M1424WR rev. I (Fios Router)

Speed: LAN Ethernet 10/100/1000 MBPS auto-sencing

Wireless 802.11b up to 11 MBPS

Wireless 802.11g up to 54 MBPS

Wireless 802.11n up to 160 MBPS

Thanks,

Rip

Yes, the rev I is faster.  It has gigabit (1000 Mbps) wired Ethernet and 802.11n (130Mbps) wireless.  The rev F is 100Mbps Ethernet and 802.11g (54Mbps) .

The rev F. does not have 802.11n.

Enjoy

Actually the rev F does have 802.11n support.  But its radios are limited to draft 802.11n and only get to about 65Mbps (real speed) vs 802.11g which is limited to about 20-25 Mbps (real speed)

Thanks so much for your reply.  Since I have the 50/25 service, does it really make a difference?  I cannot get more than about 20.0mbps download and 20Mbps upload on my wireless devices, which is about the same or worse than on my old modem.  Is there a setting that I need to change?   Cheers, Rip

I can get my wireless to perform at 50mbps using the ref F.  But to do so need to follow the tuneup suggestions that optimize that.

  • use wireless n devices
  • not be to far from router
  • make sure to switch router to WPA2 encryption
  • set router to wireless N only support
