you would need a truck roll to do this. It is not something you are able to do. You would need to setup a service call with verizon support.

To activate the CAT 5 they are now asking for a truck roll? I thought this could be done over the phone with support. Went from something they can do while you wait, to something that takes a day, to now a truck roll? I know COAX and Ethernet should do the same speed but there has been issues with VPN on COAX. Usually it works or it doesn't. I know if you have COAX you can not use your own router. If he is getting 10mbps with the speed test and no VPN and 300kbps with the VPN connected, I would say it is an issue with the network that he is making a VPN connection with. If the router is an issue there is no way to test that theory with another router if the IP is over COAX.

Just my 2cents worth.

Unless your going to break the lock on the ONT and run your own cable.

Cool. They are locking them now? I thought the customer side with those connections is accessable. My people have run their own CAT5. Oh well that is what I get for thinking. Not that I was meaning to disagree with your post. Things change and yes I don't know everything. Have a good day.Smiley Sad

Guys,

What makes no sense at this point is why the vpn issue affects only download speed (~300kbs w/ vpn, 10MBs w/o) and not upload speed (~1.6MBs w/ and w/o vpn). Do you have any insight?

Thanks

I have had my fios for over a year now, so It maybe different, and maybe a regional thing.

It all depends on the VPN settings. The may have it where only the download run via the VPN but uploading runs independently. That is the issues with VPNs, they have so many different configurations, its not really a exact science.

very often, with a vpn, particularly if the admin is very aggressive, they will set it so that all internet connectivity only goes thru the gateway router of the vpn server / router. in other words, once you are on the vpn, you are connected thru the internet using fios to the work router / server BUT any internet connectivity from there doesn't go thru the fios internet but thru your work internet. the trouble shooting for a vpn issue should almost always be done by the IT person that maintains the VPN's. unfortunately, they are often configured and maintained by people that are inadequately trained and fios employees are not trained on vpns either. besides, it's not like there is one basic vpn setup, there is a lot of customization that goes into a vpn setup, so even if one has been trained on many VPN's, there is no way that person can no the personal / company policy choices that were made when setting up a particular companies VPN.

Problem Solved.....but not by the solutions proposed to date.

I called Verizon, convinced them to switch my coax-only (MOCA) service to enable Ethernet (Cat 5) via the ONT. I got this insight by visiting the Verizon FIOS wiki (http://www.verizonfioswiki.com/index.php/Using_Your_Own_Router), which explains this solution nicely, if a little loose on a few steps.

Verizon tech support agreed to come out, but the technician was dubious about the solution. In fact, he was not aware of it. He became reasonably convinced by the wiki document (ref'd above), which I printed out and showed him as he arrived. Given that the vpn speed was the driver for my switch to FIOS, he agreed to give it a try.

Bottom line: he activated Cat-5 on ONT, ran that Cat-5 cable to the existing Actiontec Router, and voila!, vpn speed issue completely resolved. That is: I can now get ~10Mbs download, and 1.6Mbs upload with Cisco vpn. Fully admitted: I do not have the technical details available to explain how this solution works, but it's clear that on the Actiontec router, the handling of internet data via Cat-5 is considerably more robust than when that same data is handled exclusively over the coax circuitry.

Current (working) configuration is:

Internet: ONT --> Cat 5 --> Actiontec --> my own Airport router (wireless)

TV:   ONT --> coax --> Actiontec --> set top box/ TV

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I hope this posting helps anyone else with the same or similar problems.

Second post in this thread.

Only other recomendation would be to try the Ethernet from the ONT to your router. This would require an Ethernet cable from your ONT to the router in addition to the COAX. Also a call to have Verizon switch the ports on the ONT. I like the Ethernet option because it leaves my options open.

Strange how MOCA is causing issues with some VPN. I am a firm believer to let COAX Interernet die with 10base T. But it does have it's place with Media as in IP/TV. Most users will not have an issue with MOCA, and from what I have heard from other users, it has become the default install. Anyone can run coax, or existing can be used if it is the correct type. Now let's see if anyone can get the pairs right on a RJ-45. I think FIOS should use coax for TV STBs and that is it. Come on now do we really want to be compaired to cable modems? But that is just me.

Glad to hear things picked up for you.
