Told there is a limit on the number of devices

HI

I am considering migrating to FIOS and I spoke to a rep on the phone and he told me that there was a limit of 11 devices that could be connected to the wireless router. When I started asking questions about it he got snappy and wanted to get back to the sales script.

Could someone provide info on what limitations exist on connectivity? Is it a hard limit requiring all devices to be registered? Is it a simultaneous limit?

Can I add my own wireless router to get around the issue?

Thanks in advance

I believe you received bad info.  The following is from the Actiontec website.

  • Is there a limit to the number of Wireless connections, that the Actiontec Wireless Router or Modem will allow?
There is no limit on the number of wireless connections, but there is a limit to the amount of traffic or bandwidth that can pass through the Actiontec. It is good to keep in mind that each computer added to the network will reduce the bandwidth available to the existing network computers. It is recommended to limit the number of connections to 45, but this number can vary depending on the activities of the network computers. For example, downloading MP3s, ISOs, or other large files, require much more bandwidth than checking email or simple Web browsing.

Yes you can add your own wireless routers/waps however it is not needed to get around any issue as Walt178 pointed out.

More of an issue will be that you will probably find the wireless signal from the Verizon router to be somewhat lacking performance wise and will add your own router/s to gain better coverage and performance.

Even the actiontec info is wrong.  There is the limit to the number of Ip addresses it can assign, 253.  And of course it will probably choke before it reaches the limit.

Well actually the limit is technically is far greater than 253.  The number 253 is based on the mask of 255.255.255.0  Modifying the 4th octet will lower the number of hosts while modifying the first 3 octets will increase the number of hosts

www.subnet-calculator.com  will give you a brief description on how the bits in the mask control the number of hosts and subnets available.

Yes, although common classful nets are even more limited, but it will choke with much less.  Not sure how many it has enough to keep track of with the memory in most version of their router.
