Verizon Internet Security Suite - MCSHIELD slowing and freezing windows

Ever since I removed and reinstalled Security Suite, MCSHIELD.EXE has been hogging resources, and at times freezing my computer. Reading various blogs, this seems to be a known problem with mcshield.

Looking at other posts, it seems that the only ones marked solved have the suggestion to get rid of Security Suite and install some other antivirus.

I also know that Verizon does not make this product; but, it is the only one they supply.

I have tried calling support, who switched me to McAfee support, whose automated telephone system demanded a pin number before it would connect me with a live technician.

Does anyone know of an actual fix to this problem; or, is the only viable fix to ditch the Verizon supported product in favor of one that actually works?

Run this tool after uninstalling McAfee and before reinstalling: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
