Seems like Verizon, is ALWAYS trying to charge me. I have just about had it, they have become ridiculous with their fees.
I upgraded to Quantam TV. They charged me to send me the STB boxes that are "Required" to view their cable that I am paying for and they charge me a monthly fee for STB's and will not sell me the STB's boxes (is that 3 or 4 times I was charged). On the other hand, the router, that always has problems, they will sell you. They seem to come out with a new router every 6 months. What I have discovered is that, my router will start acting funny about the same time they release the new router. Coincidence? I don't think so, when you call to have your router fixed, they suggest the new router, instead of supporting the product they already sell
Verizon needs to step up. Sell the equipment or don't sell the equipment and provide it free with my astronomical price I am already paying.
To me it seems like price gouging because they have a monopoly on the STB. You must buy from them. I don't understand how this is legal if the eye's of the public or goverment.
I will be posting this on the soial media sites to see if it can gain some traction with the consumers. I bet I will have a 100% agreement with my opinions..

Verizon doesn't come out with a new router every 6 months. More like every 2 years.
The router acting funny is a coincidence. Unless you can prove it it's not a valid statement. There are many Fios customers who still use the original g band routers from many years ago with no issues. What you are probably seeing is nothing more then network/server issues which are typical. Traceroutes will show it.
The new routers are not a requirement for service. They give the basic routers with service. Yes new customers are charged a monthly router fee, but that can be avoided by buying the router which a lot of providers who now charge a monthly router fee won't even let you do. Even when a router is included with service with no rental fees you are still paying to rent that router. Nothing is ever free. Cable providers are now just showing the charges seperate. It would be raise the cost of their bundles or list them at a lower price with the router fees and others seperate.
All cable providers have their fees. Here Brighthouse has more of those extra fees then Verizon does. With networks and sports channels always demanding more money from the cable providers we always see those fees passed onto us one way or another. Is it fair? Of course not, but we as consumers have a choice to not do business with them if we don't like how they do business or operate. We have the freedom to take our business elsewhere unlike years ago where we had 1 choice for cable. Now we have other providers, antenna, streaming devices like Roku and Amazon Fire TV, networks online, satellite, etc..
The most powerful statement one can make is take their business elsewhere if they aren't happy. No one provider is ever going to be perfect for everyone, but if one doesn't like what they do it's time to look at other options. As long as people keep paying the companies, we will always have extra fees.
It will be years before streaming media takes over completely and even then you watch those streaming media companies will start doing the same thing by adding on extra costs. ISp's will demand more money for traffic then those fees will be passed onto us.

Sorry, but that link you posted doesn't prove anything and you are wrong about the every 6 months thing. I have been with Fios for years and there was never a new router released in 6 months time. The rev. i came out way later then 6 months after the rev. g and the new Gateway came out around 2 years after the rev. i was released. I know because I purchased one the day they came out. Which ones do you think came out after just 6 months?

SinCara is correct. The Actiontec rev I has been out for several years. The new Quantum router was released in the last few months. Verizon does not release a new router every 6 months.
As far as STB's go, the FCC already tried to create a market for customer owned boxes. The issue is how to manage the security needed to make sure customers get exactly the channels they pay for; no more and no less. The FCC's attempt was something called "separable security," and was brought to market as the "Cable Card." Cable Cards can be inserted into TVs and customer owned STBs (like TiVOs). Cable Cards are rented from the cable company for a much smaller fee than a STB.
Because the Cable Card is simply an access control device, it does not handle any services such as the guide, VoD or DVR. Those functions are left to the device that uses the Cable Card. Guess what, these functions are tightly integrated into the cable companies network services. As such, they can only run on a cable company managed device. Customer owned devices can't run the cable company's services. Because of this, most people have chosen to use cable company STBs instead of buying their own Cable Card enabled TVs or STBs. The number of Cable Cards sold has been tiny, as the market has clearly spoken that they don't want Cable Cards.
That said, you should still be able to get a Cable Card from Verizon. Buy your own TiVO or similar and you won't have to rent one of their boxes. You will sill pay a few bucks a month to rent the Cable Card, but it will be much lower than the cost of a Verizon rental. You'll probably need to pay TiVO a fee for their guide data. Or, you could build a Linux Media PC with a Cable Card enabled tuner.
