actiontec MI424WR hasn't been working for 2 months

Modem never had any problems until 2 months ago. Local area connection works just fine, but wireless doesn't. Only 3 lights out of the usual 6 are lit: Ethernet WAN, Ethernet LAN(connected to desktop and the light flickers), and Wireless.

Called Verizon for a replacement router. Turns out that it was just too old, and needed to be replaced.

First step is to try re-booting the router. You can either just pull the plug for about 30 seconds, or connect to it at htt://192.168.1.1., login in as administrator, and command it to reboot. You might also want to check out the wirelss settings, and make sure that your wireless wasn't accidentally disabled. Lastly, make sure the wireless antenna is securely connected to the router. No antenna connection.. No wireless.

Lastly, you can try re-setting the router. Press and hold the reset button for about 30 seconds IIRC. That will reset the router to original factory settings (so any setting you may have, such as your own password and administrator ID, wireless and other settings will be lost if you do this).

If none of these steps work, you need to contact Verizon to get a replacement router.

And LAN doesn't work by itself, you have to disconnect the ethernet cord connecting to the internet and use that on the desktop, because if I use it the regular way, desktop says Local Area Connection 2 has little or no connectivity.

Two months? Shouldn't have to go that long with such a problem.

It sounds like the router may need replacing. Ignore the instructions about trying to visit http://192.168.1.1/ now that you've provided additional detail. The reset route is really your best bet in restoring the router before asking for a replacement. Switch the router off using the rear power switch. Hold in the Reset button on the back for 30 seconds and then switch on the router holding down that button for an additional 30 seconds. If it fails to work correctly, it's dead and needs a replacement.

Pressing that button should cause the Power light to flash and all of the lights to go out until the router reboots. From there, your router should power up like it used to in the past; wireless light comes on, Ethernet LAN light comes on and the rear port indicates 100Mbps connectivity, Internet light should light up, Ethernet WAN should light up if you're using Ethernet from your ONT, and finally the LAN Coax light should light up. If I'm getting your setup correct, the only things that should not be lit will be the unused Ethernet ports and one of the WAN lights.

I am wondering how you are getting online though. If you're using Ethernet from the ONT instead of Coaxial, I assume you're simply connecting your PC directly to the ONT or are running through your own router. If not, then disregard this section of my post 🙂

But then again I might be doing it wrong. Hold reset for 30 seconds while its off, cut it on, whole still holding the reset button for 30 more seconds?

Don't worry about powering off the router, while holding the reset button.

With the router powered on, press in the reset button until all the lights go out.

Once the lights have gone out, you can release the reset button.

The lights on the router should flash as it reboots.

Once it has rebooted, you should be able to connect to 192.168.1.1.

None of the lights go off when pressing reset. Its almost like the reset button doesn't work.
