beeping ONT

I recently had Verizon FiOS internet installed. When the installer finished, the ONT was beeping. I asked him about it and he said that it is now policy not to install a battery in the ONT if you aren't getting Verizon phone service. He silenced the alarm by pressing the alarm silence button for 5 seconds and left. Since then every 24 hours the ONT starts beeping every 15 minutes until I press the alarm silence button again. Is there any way to permanently silence the alarm?

First I heard of them not supplying batteries.  Bad in that without one the alarm will keep going off.  There is no official way to disable the alarm, although some have found and pulled the alarm  circuit (not recommended unless you are sure you can reconnect it,  You break it you own it and verizon will charge you extra.to fix it).

I'd suggest you contact Verizon and ask them how to silence the alarm.  As TNS_2 says, it will continue to go off unless a battery is added or some other modification is made.

In my opinion, they should have given you a battery with the new install.

Other options include purchasing a battery on your own (Amazon has great prices), finding a material to cover the beeper, or modifying it as TNS_2 suggests.

Good Luck.

This isn't true. I've had my battery out for a few months now and I never have any alarm. Only the light stays lit.

This might vary on the version of the ont one has though.

My battery expired a year or so back and the ont started beeping low battery.  I silenced the beeping by disconnecting the battery.

I'm extremely disappointed that Verizon would purposefully install something in my home that beeps extremely loudly every 15 minutes with no official way to permanently silence it. This is not appreciated at all.

This subject gets brought up frequently so if I don't answer any questions here look around the forums and you will find plenty of answer.

First of all there are a few different ways to silence the alarm:

1. Purchase a new battery. If you want to have one that is. they are there so that in the case of a power outage you can make some phone calls on a regular lan phone for a few hours

2. reset the battery. Many times we find that the BBU has for some reason (usually after a power outage) it has stopped charging the battery. this can be fixed by unplugging the battery from the unit and then plugging it back in. When you plug it back in the system should start to charge the battery if it wasn't before and that should stop the beeping

3. The last a final way is the get rid of the battery. You can unplug the system power and  remove the battery (services will be turned off while you do this) and then plug the power cable back in. Most units will not continue beeping when the battery is removed and the system reset.

4. there is the alarm silence button, but as somebody already said that will only silence the alarm for 24 hours at a time.

Logan,

Verizon installed this thing in my house without a battery on purpose. Therefore:

1. I refuse to pay for something that I do not need and Verizon refuses to provide.
2. I cannot reset the battery because there has NEVER been a battery.
3. There is no battery so I cannot remove it. The system continues to beep.
4. I'm really sick of going into the basement and hitting the alarm silence button every day.

If it is policy to not install a battery unless you are getting phone service, I understand that, but you CANNOT install an ONT that will beep without a battery knowing full well that there won't be a battery installed.

This is ridiculous!

What version of the ONT do you have? I have my battery out and it never beeps.

no it is not Verizons policy to leave the battery out when installing a unit. Did the unit already exist when you came to this address or did they do a fresh install of all equipment? When was your installation?
