The firmware can be upgraded, but Verizon does perform that action automatically as they release newer builds of the firmware. That page may not have the latest version so be sure to check the version numbers BEFORE loading the BIN into the router.

I always found that site to have rather old copies of the router software. And currently it doesn't even show some of the newer routers. However the page in the router does appear to point to the latest version. And of course, as you mentioned, it should update automatically.
