Don't blame Verizon, blame the NFL for raising its cost.
You could always upgrade to the Ultimate package where Red Zone is included (in most areas).

I have ultimate so it's not an issue for me, but I wonder if Verizon would let you "upgrade" just for the 4ish months of football season. It's cheaper to do that than pay $80 for the one channel and you get so much more with ultimate.

I have Preferred HD and it doesn't come with redzone. I was told I'd have to upgrade to the Extreme HD plan ($15 a month) as well as purchase redzone ($70) one time price. This is ridiculous for 17 days worth of redzone (17 sundays) for $145, completely unreasonable.

That's why most upgrade to the Ultimate package where it's included. Ultimate if upgrading from Preferred/Prime is $30-$35 a month more while getting some premium movie channels as well.... and you can always downgrade after.
