i heard earlier this year that FIOS would "deem us worthy" of adding an external HD sometime in 2010 (like, for example:

we're almost at the end of the year- is this out yet? what's the story?
As far as I understand, ESATA support for external HD will be in 1.9 release, and that were suppose to be out sometime in December. I installed FIOS Oct. 16, got new 7232 DVR with 500G HD, but preinstalled software is still 1.71. That means it has to be first upgraded to 1.8 sometime within next several wekks and then either in December or January, as most bloggers believe, to 1.9 release.
Knowing that Verizon almost never keeps up with their schedules and rarely if ever meet deadlines, we can realistically assume that 1.9 ( and ESATA support along) for all FIOS customers will be out ( hopefully) by the early summer at the earliest, maybe later.
