Cicso DVR not recording series - and other issues from a dissatisfied new FiOS customer

[ Edited ]

once more with formating because apparently 'rich text' doesn't understand CR/LFs?  (may be due to NoScript blocking lithium.com scripts - hint, Verizon, if you *need* to use 3rd party scripts, have a no script tag in place to tell people to turn it on)

Onto the regularly scheduled issues:

Just noticed today that a previously scheduled (and working) Series had stopped working. (The Last Word with Lawrence ODonnell on MSNBC)

The culprit? The show had it's time changed. The Guide data was correct, it showed the new time as 10pm, but the series was still trying to record at 8pm. Note, it was not recording because there was no Last Word on at 8pm anymore, it's not like it recorded the 8pm show instead. I literally had to create a new series to get it to record the show.

How is this remotely a production quality DVR? Did it hard code the time it would record? Shouldn't it record shows based on the show ID and the current guide data and not the time it was on when the series happened to be created?

Will other shows that have their times changed (AND have the actual Guide data updated) not record as well?

other issues:

How do I set a Series to record specific NHL Team games, i.e. the Washington Capitals)?

- Tivo had a 'keyword series' that I could enter keywords and it would search for shows that matched.

How do I view the separate tuners?

- so far I have only been able to use the 'Last' button to switch to the previous channel, but that forces a switch to the other tuner, not changing the channel on the current tuner. Those are 2 separate actions; 1. go to last channel 2. switch to other tuner. They should not be combined.

Another point, when I am recording one thing When using 'Last' it is not remembering where I was on the previous channel.

- On Tivo, I used to watch Tuner 1 for a bit, pause Tuner 1, switch to Tuner 2, watch for a bit, pause Tuner 2, switch back to Tuner 1 and un-pause to start watching where I left off. The Cisco apparently sends me all the way back to the beginning of the buffer on Tuner 1 when I switch back to it. It *really* should be able to know that I've paused the channel and where I was and go there.

Watching pre-recorded Monday Night Football on a satellite box.

- Shouldn't Skip forward back work when watching a previously recorded show on a satellite box? It doesn't now but did previously. (I specifically checked this on the day of install)  Pause watching the pre-recorded to go to live TV (Pressed 'FiOS TV' button) but it apparently doesn't remember that I paused the recording. Shouldn't it know that and take back to 'resume' rather than the beginning?

Of course no issue list would be complete without the sheer slowness of this remote control/DVR.

- Literally will stop responding for 10 seconds...then rapid fire play everything that was pressed while you were trying to figure out if it registered or not. Next,

On Screen Feedback.

- When I click 'Save' on the modify series popup screen, there is absolutely no indication that it took the save until the save is complete which can take seconds (I expect it could take some time). If you know a task will take a significant amount of time (and 3 seconds is a significant amount of time here) - think windows and the cursor as an hourglass to at least tell you the computer is working. Basic usability seems unknown to the software programmers (and I am a programmer myself).

Been on FiOS a week and my 10 year old Tivo blows away this Cicso rig...

How about a complaint about this message board. The 'preview' tab erases my comments?????? just wow.

Re: Cicso DVR not recording series - and other issues from a dissatisfied new FiOS customer

You would need to check the settings on that series to record. If it is set to record "This time slot only" , then if the time changes it will not record. Also if it is set to "this channel only" , if it airs on another channel it will not record.

There is no way to record a series based on keyword, no way to seperate last channel and tuner swap, pause in the last channel buffer, working indicator for long tasts. These are all good suggestions though. This would be a perfect candidate for the Verizon Idea Exchange. Please search on the idea exchange and cast your vote. There may be another member who made the same suggestion. The new software Version for the boxes 1.9 allows you with a multiroom DVR to play anywhere, pause, and pick back up from anywhere. It does remember where the pause location is.

The remote control delay is not a delay in the remote, its in the box. You can reset the box and its temporary internal memory by unplugging power cord then plug it back in.
