When my FIOS was installed the quick lesson I got from the technician indicated that I would be able to record a show from the beginning even if it has already begun. I have not been able to figure out how to do this.

It will only record from the start if that channel was already tuned to on your DVR, or client box if you have Quantum service. Otherwise, it will only record what has been playing since you changed the channel.

Try this:
Record a "live" show in progress.
Record a "taped/rerun" show in progress

I tried both and the prerecorded show ended up being recorded where I started it. The live show was on from 6-10 and I started recording at 9:45. When I played it back, it recorded as far back as almost an hour and a half. Neither recorded from the start
