Re: FIOS HD DVR loses audio at random times on random channels

[ Edited ]

Verizon has a couple dvr models, all of them have the same firmware, so kinda an odd situation, but can you rememberr what the model number was on each of them?

they have the 6416, the 7216 and the 7232

Also keep in mind, when I linked that thread, that it was not only for people with HDMI connections, and that it was more specifically for TOS LINK users that were having HD audio drops, and it had a mixture of different video cables being used.  component, and hdmi alike.

so it may still provide decent information.

I had the 7216 previously. And a 6416 before that. It croaked in me though. I now have the 7232.  I was watching Fri night's playback of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher and the audio dropped constantly. To the point where it was unacceptable.

My receiver (a Sony STR-DE845) has a mode called A.F.D. or Auto Format Decode.  What ever encoding was used on the broadcast, A.F.D. "will present the sound exactly as it was encoded ".  That's quoted directly from the manual. There is also a mode where you can select a sound field to create a '"customized" field. When I change the setting on the reciever from A.F.D. (Auto Format Decode)  to the selective mode, everything works fine.

When working properly, A.F.D will switch back and forth from 5.1 to 2-channels when a show goes to a commercial break or if the format should change depending on the encoding.  I haven't seen that many commercials encoded in 5.1 that I recall. If a broadcast is not encoded in 5.1 at all, A.F.D. will automatically use the  2-channel mode with the sub-woofer.  I haven't monitored the system enough to determine if the problems lies in the 2-channel encoding as oppsed to the 5.1.  What I do know is that if I turn off A.F.D. and go with the selective Mode and use Normal Surround as the mode (there are a host of other modes like Cinema, Concert Hall etc.), there are no issues.  With this setting mutlichannel broadcasts will play exactly as they were encoded.  2-channel broadcasts are decoded with Dolby Pro Logic to create surround.  So even though a show like Bill Maher's that is not encoded in 5.1, Normal Surround mode will create a surround field using Pro Logic and put some of the audio through the center channel speaker even though that's not how it was originally created.  In A.F.D. mode, it would just automatically switch to 2-channel.

The previously mentioned recorded episode of Real Time I was trying to watch played just fine if I switched to the a selective mode.  Whenever I switched back to A.F.D. the problem came back.  If I left it alone, eventually the sound would be restored.  But that was after maybe 5-10 minutes of play time.   If I backed up the DVR to where the sound dropped, while leaving the receiver in A.F.D mode, it would go out again at that same spot.  Which suggests that it occured during the original airing.  I stopped the playback and switched to some live broadcast and there was not sound issue.  But I should qualify that statement by saying there was not sound problem on the specific channel I happened to switch to at that specific time.

A.F.D. has been working flawlessly with my DVD players and previous DVRs (Time Warner's model and the FIOS 6416 model after switching to Verizon). Also it's still bulletproof when it comes to the DVD player.  It's just after I got the 7216 and 7232 all my problems started with the DVR. The problem appears to be with the encoding and how it's decoded in the receiver.  It doesn't matter if I use Component or HDMI cables.  Some channels never have any problems and some constantly do.  I shouldn't have to switch modes as a work around.

Why can't these geniuses figure this out?  I'm so tired of hearing "we're sorry for the inconvenience sir...I understand your frustration."  All I keep getting is excuses and the same troubleshooting approach repeatedly.  Excuses don't solve problems, action does.

Re: FIOS HD DVR loses audio at random times on random channels

This problem STILL hasn't been resolved.  The latest is, while watching VOD Hawaii Five-0, the sounds drops when it goes to a break.  This also happened during commerrcials breaks when I was watching a playback of 'Big Bang Theory' a few days ago.  But it didn't happen with every commercial.  Some had sound and some didn't.  What is it about commercials that would cause the sound drop?  Is Verizon trying to implement some kind audio suppression algorithm for commercials so they don't blast you out of your chair like they normally do?  Maybe it still has some bugs and the sound is overly suppressed.

There are a couple search bar's on this site.  I'd like them to reduce that down to a search just for the board that you're on.

However, when I search - I put in "HD audio drop" and I find this thread as the first one. HDMI AUDIO Drop out

Which reveals this solution.

a user on here named lasagna posted a good fix for that problem a while back.

you have to access the user settings menu of the box (different than the standard fios menu)

you will use your front display of the box instead of the remote.

Press power select menu  (1/2 second interval, so power and then select and then menu)

The user settings menu will pop up and you have to go to advanced hdmi options. (may say additional hdmi options)

Once you select that option, you will have an audio section.  go in there and change it from auto to either pass through, or L-PCM.

back out of the menu and watch tv.   it's been reported as a good fix for a lot of users, so give it a try and let us know if it fixes it.

You have the 7232 model, which is slightly different.

So try to follow these instructions.

was harder to get to, but I got it by hitting power with one hand on the front display of the box, and then the OK button and then the MENU button on the remote.

So it was power off front display with one hand, and then OK 1 time then MENU 1 time using your other hand and the remote control.  that seemed to get there for me.  don't get discouraged if it doesn't work the first time,   the timing is peculiar and it sometimes takes me a few times to get the timing.

I tried this 'solution' but while the DVR is using a component cable, there is no 'advanced' menu.  My guess is that the menu is only available when using an HDMI cable.  So now what?  As I submit this, the current episode of 'The Glades' is airing live and there is no sound.  It also broadcasts in Dolby Digital 2-channel audio.  I can switch to a channel that is encoded 3/2 Dolby Digital like USA's 'In Plain sight' and the sound comes through just fine.  No amount of resetting and power cycling fixes this.
Has anyone been able to find a solution for this when using component video cable and TosLonk digital audio? I sure would like to know what it is.

Re: FIOS HD DVR loses audio at random times on random channels

I just signed up for FIOS TV.  When the technician installed it he connected the box to my Vizio set with the HDMI Cable.  When showing me how the remote worked certain channels in the HD range would lose audio.  In order to get the audio back on that particular station you would have to turn the power off and then back on. After reading all the post on this subject I am amazed that the Verizon Technicians are not aware of this problem, also.  This seems to be a common issue.  So why is it that the technicians are clueless???  They tried to tell me it was the TV?  Sent out for a new box?  Still the same problem. They then informed me I would have to use the RCA Cable hookup.  This solved the problem, but am I missing something in the picture and audio quality??  I should be able to use the best connection possible without this problem.  Isn't that what I am paying for here? Not real happy about the outcome.  Before reading all the messages here on the subject I was going to call Vizio to find out what they had to say about the subject.  Now maybe I will try the box menu as suggested......

Thanks for the information

Re: FIOS HD DVR loses audio at random times on random channels

[ Edited ]

Would like to thank Hubrisnxs for posting the fix lasagna had suggested. In our case, we just upgraded our HD DVR's from the 6xxx series to the 7232-p2 and ran into this problem with both boxes. Once we set the boxes to use L-PCM our audio problem went away. We would loose audio on random channels at random times when flipping through the channels. Getting to that specific menu was the trickiest part, however, if you follow the directions in Hubrisnxs post it should be a piece of cake. Thanks to this forum and its members our problem has been resolved.

To get to the menu:

"So it was power off front display with one hand, and then OK 1 time then MENU 1 time using your other hand and the remote control. that seemed to get there for me. don't get discouraged if it doesn't work the first time, the timing is peculiar and it sometimes takes me a few times to get the timing."

Note - Verizon tech support had no clue!
