If I drop my cable subscription to the most basic package I can keep my HBO subscription so long as I keep one STB, correct? The HBO subscription just requires enrollment in any cable package...?

Depends on what you mean as the most basic.
I don't believe that you can if you drop to the locals package.
But I would say go online and see what you can do in terms of packages and options.

If you mean local channels only then yes you can if you are out of contract. I believe if you are still in contract then dropping to local only would incur an etf. Dont quote me on that though. They are now offering deals online for new customers for local only with the movie channels (as found here) http://www.verizon.com/home/MLP/OnlineCS1.html so it is possible.
You can keep HBO as you said. If you want just local you have to call them being a current customer since the account online will most likely only show Select HD as the lowest tier.
