More space for DVR?

Hey. Does anyone know when Verizon will release a DVR with a larger storage capacity? The verizon tech that came to my house said they should release one within the next year. Is this true? If not, when?

There are rumors of a Moto box with larger hard drive (something like 320 G instead of 160 G) as well as a different manufacturer that may allow external expansion.  These are just rumors and supposedly something may be available by the end of the year.  Verizon has made no official promises as to a release of a larger storage DVR.

yes Verizon will be getting larger HD's in the new stb's. We will release the info on them shortly before they go out....Obviously there will few on release and then will have additional stock perhaps a month or 2 after release.

Re: More space for DVR?

Verizon doesn't have a choice about larger HDD's. The 160gb capacity is now the smallest capacity  3.5 inch HDD in production at the major HDD manufacturers, so production of these 'small' drives is going to be ending soon.

I'll be surprised if anyone is still making a 160gb 3.5 inch HDD by this time next year. They cannot offer a 160gb based product if nobody is making 160gb HDD's any longer.

Re: More space for DVR?

They would stil have the ability to limit the HD Capacity Available to the DVR with the BIOS.  I have an older Panasonic ReplayTV DVR that is limited to 130GB.  I had upgraded it with a 160GB HD, knowing that I would be maxing it out at 130GB.

I thing they see the light and drop Gigabyte drives and give us Terrabyte Drives which are becoming affordable...

Re: More space for DVR?

I am hoping that the new DVRs come out before the new Tv season. I am really having a problem with the lack of space since almost every show I record is in HD. Bring it on.....please!!

Re: More space for DVR?

The 130gb limitation comes from the fact that the older Replay TV units only supported 32 bit Logical Block Address (LBA) . Later models like the 5500 series  support  48 bit LBA addressing and don't have the limit (which is actually about 137,400,000,000 bytes (128 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024). The Showstopper units originally only had 20,30 and 40gb HDD's.

The Industry went to 48 bit LBA in the early part of this decade as HDD capacity started going past 128GB.

As a practical matter, the current boxes support 160gb, which requires 48bit LBA  anyway. The hardware and software to support larger capacity drives is already in the boxes, and in use!

Re: More space for DVR?

I seem to recall seeing this same exact response from a verison employee last year on these fourms, any idea as to when? Q3 of this year, Q4?  We're having to purget the DVR almost completely every week before shows start getting deleted due to the lack of space.

I dont even bother recording the Red Sox games that are on while I'm at work anymore as the fear of the DVR deleting my wife's recordings loom over my head.

Re: More space for DVR?

What will be the process for exchanging the DVR for a new one that supports an external drive?

This is a major problem in our house as we were Cablevision customers, very happy with an external 0.5TB external drive, but stitched to FIOS to get the Tennis Channel.... there is frequently  lobbying in the house to switch back to Cablevision because of the DVR space limitation.
