I have had FIOS for several years - tv, internet and phone - and recently upgraded to the newest set top box. I'm finding the instructions very confusing. They direct me to set up a router, but I already have a router, so I'm wondering if I can skip that step and other steps related to it and go directly to the part about connecting the box. Does anyone have any insight into this? It's driving me crazy. Thanks in advance! Cathy

Yes you can skip that step and go straight to installing the set top box.

IF you mean you are installing a QUANTUM (VMS1100) box then you must have either Actiontec rev I or the new Gateway router. If you already have one of those setup you can skip the step to setup the router.
For most other configurations you will need some Verizon FIOS router setup. If you have one already, again skip the setup router step.
