No Sleep Timer or scheduled time on/off!!!

I'm a very new customer.  Just had phone/internet/tv service installed 2 days ago.

Not happy that there is no sleep time or scheduled time on and off on the STBs.  I used both these common features regularly when I was an Optimum customer. I realize I can use the sleep timer on my tv if I like to fall asleep with it on.  But why would Verizon in the very least have the box turn off on its own after say 6 hours of inactivity?

This is the 21st century Verizon!!! When I called I was told there were no plans to add these features.  COME ON VERIZON! GET WITH THE PROGRAM!

Because the TV would still be on after the STB turns itself off?

The box is never actually completely off. It can receive guide and software updates at anytime. The newer boxes that will be released at some point, will have energy saving features like a sleep mode. I don't think the sleep mode will have anything to do with your TV, and will only be for the box based on the design, and use of the internet. This is to get the energy star rating on the newer equipment, but for now it is what it is. Verizon STBs receive updates over IP and remain active even when turned off.

I have to echo the O.P.'s sentiments...  There are people (like me) that have either their TV or their sound system plugged into the STB's aux Power outlet.  I have it set so that when the box turns off, the aux outlet also turns off so I don't have to worry about setting two "sleep timers."

It's not rocket science, Time Warner has had the "technology" to do so for as long as I can remember on the Scientific Atlanta STBs.  I've sent suggestions to Verizon in hopes that we'll see the feature in the near future.  I love FiOS TV as it seemingly does everything but wipe my behind when I'm done using the toilet...  it's crazy to think that they can't put a sleep timer on the STB.

Verizon will not be adding a sleep timer. The reason is that while adding a sleep timer to the stb is possible. It will only turn off the STB, not the tv. The TV would remain on. Now in and of itself, this doesnt sound like anything to worry about, until you consider that all the STB updates are done in the middle of the night (2-3am). Updates to the stb turn it on and off as it reboots and updates. This would cause the pic and sound on the TV to come back on in the middle of the night. Not good.

In fact that is the reason for the "press menu to watch fios tv" message on the TV that was added with IMG 1.6.  Many people were turning off the STB and when the pic went blank on the screen, they thought the TV was off too. Then when the STB's updated in the middle of the night, suddenly people were hearing voices in the house. This frightened several people and Verizon responded by putting a message on the screen to let people know that the tv was still on.

No, sleep timer on the STB will not happen. Its a bad idea. But the TV's do have a sleep timer. Now what Verizon should do is to add a sleep button to the remote to control the TV's sleep timer. But who knows if they will do that....

Now while some people would be able to set additional devices to turn off with the STB. Most would not. And Verizon needs and should consider the masses, not the individuals.

A sleep time for the STB is actualy pretty worthless. As others have pointed out, the STB never is really turned off, in fact as best I can tell the only difference between it being on and being off is what appears at the audio and video outputs of the unit, and the front panel of the STB (displaying the on-LED, and time verus channel display).

I have been unable to measure any difference in power consumption between on and off. With the QIP6416 it is about 40 watts as I recall the QIP2500 was about 20 watts.
