Power Surge = No STB power

We have Verizon Fios TV and i have a Motorola 7216 Hi-Def DVR in my bedroom. It has worked flawlessly up until today when we had a power surge in our house. The power only blinked for a second and that was it. Everything in the house works just fine except for my DVR STB.

There is no power to the box. It is plugged into a surge protector along with my TV and Xbox 360, both of which are working fine. But for some reason the power won't turn on on the box. I've tried unplugging for 15sec and plugging back in, tried unplugging from the surge protector for 15sec and plugging back in. I've even tried both of those methods but for 2-3min and still nothing.

I tried using the Verizon Home Agent program to reset the STB but still nothing. Like I said, everything else works fine except for my STB. Any ideas? Or should I just call Verizon and have them come look at it?

I'm worried that the box fried itself with the power surge, when I do hit the power button I can hear a VERY faint sound from the box. But I have to be right next to the box and pushing power from there to hear it.

This would seem rather simple to resolve ... without complicating things by trying to tell the tech support people the story starting with the power surge and all the troubleshooting stuff you did, simply call Verizon and tell them that the box won't power on.   They'll probably do some basic troubleshooting with you which you should patiently oblige and then decide to send you a new box.

yeah, this is pretty cut and dry. Time to call in, tell them it will not power up. They will ask you to make sure it is plugged in (at both ends, the power cord can be disconnected from the stb itself). They will ask you to move the plug on the power strip to a known working outlet (IE swap with the tv), then send you a box. If it wont power up, there is not anything that can be done.

Ok so funny thing happened today. We had another small power surge in the area, gotta love Florida storms, and the box turned back on. So one power surge knocked it out, and a second one turned it back on. Gotta love it. Thanks for the suggestions though. I'll make sure if it happens again to call Verizon directly.

You might want to up the protection on all your electronics to a UPS rather than just a surge protected outlet.  I have a UPS on my STB and TV, my computers, and the ONT (the battery bacup is plugged into a UPS).

This might be a long shot but.... Next time this happens, wait at least 2 hours then try it again. I used to be a manufacturing test equipment support engineer for various factories in Florida and we experienced thousands of storms like yours. Lots of surges and lights flashing inside the plants. Some of our equipment would be knocked out by the surges and then return to normal operation 30-60 minutes later. Investigations of a few showed some thermal and voltage/current-overload sensors in the power supplies that would auto-reset after a surge. I even designed a few of these components into equipment we sent to places overseas. The idea is to protect the equipment but not require anyone to even have to replace a fuse or reset a breaker.  I don't know the internals of these DVR's and STB's, but I suppose it's possible.
