Problem with Sony autoprogram and recognizing digital and analog channels on FIOS

I had a frustrating problem over the weekend with our brand new Sony V5100 HDTV. We got it out of the box, set it up, then turned it on to find the factory set up on the screen. Then we followed instructions and ran the "autoprogram" for it to recognize all the fios channels. To do this procedure,  I started out running a HDMI cable from the back of the motorola Settop box with DVR to the main HDMI input to the Sony TV, and it wouldn't recognize any channels through the program. So then I reset and tried again with component video cables and audio from the motorola box to the Sony. Still no recognition of any channels. Finally, I just detached the coaxial cable from the back of the Motorola and just screwed it directly into the back of the Sony. Then it would run the auto- program, but it recognized the channels in a higglety pigglety fasion, giving them all weird numbers, like 16.2 .  What did I do wrong? Why can't I just run an HDMI cable from the Motorola to the Sony? What do I do to get the channels numbered properly for our new tv? Thanks very much, Laurel

well this is how the set up should look

Wall coax, plugs into the Fios TV In on the back of the DVR, HDMI from the DVR to your TV

and then it's important, that you change the input on your TV to HDMI.

To me though, because you are getting the pixelization then that means that the tv and the cable box probably

don't like the tv cable you are using from the wall to the units.   So you mght want to play with that or replace it

I would probably replace it.

now the 16.2 thing is normal IF you are plugged coax direct to the tv with no cable box.

So 16.1 might be the HD version of the channel, 16.2 would be the standard def version so on and so forth.   If you plug it into a box, you won't see that - you'll see them more normally displayed.

The pixelization and the channel break up comes from the cable that you are using though, so start there.  is that  new cable? existing cable?  does it plug into a jack in the wall, or run through the wall to the attic or basement?

Where does the OP say anywhere that he has pixelation? The problem was he was thinking the TV would recognize channels thru the box. If you want to tune in with your TV's tuner, you have to do what you found on your third try, just connect the coax to the TV, and yes, the channel numbers will be weird. That is how digital channel numbers are displayed. You will only get your local channels though. Maybe about 50 all together.

i am translating from higgelety piggelety. to pixelization.  Oh I see, he meant the channel numbers were what was higgelet piggelety,  not the picture quality.  ok ignore all the coax stuff I Was talking about.

everything else should be fine though

If you are using a STB, then you should connect it with an HDMI cable or component cable as you did.

However, you do not need to autoprogram your TV if you are using an HDMI or component or composite or any other indirect connection. That is because the STB is acting as the tuner; it will automatically receive channel information as part of its on-screen graphics. All the HDMI connection is doing is delivering that video feed to your TV.

Therefore, what you need to do is press the "input" button on your TV remote and select HDMI, or component, whatever you are using. Then you control the channels using your STB remote, not your TV remote, which changes the channels on your STB, not your TV. Again, your TV is only receiving the video from your STB, it's not directly changing the channel itself. It's like having a VCR and turning your TV to channel 3 in the old days; you just need to pick up the video.

The reason why, when you tried hooking the TV up directly to the wall with coax is because most FiOS programming is encrypted digital. That is why the STB is needed to "unscramble" the channels and output them to your TV along with all of its on-screen graphics and program guide. Therefore, if you connect coax directly to the TV, the only channels you will receive are local channels (i.e. CBS, NBC, PBS), the ones that Verizon cannot by law encrypt. The reason why some of those channels are "16-2" or "17-214" is because digital broadcasting, as opposed to analog (think the digital transition last summer) uses "sub-channels," which are the -XXX. Verizon can assign whatever number they want to their encrypted programming (i.e. ESPN HD can be 214-1445) because the STB will read that channel and display it within it's own system as Ch. 570.

If your Sony is set up like my 4 year old Sony Bravia, the HDMI input is Video 6 and  you will have to label it. So plug the HDMI into the TV and switch to Video 6 and you will get picture. If you don't you will just have to keep switching through the inputs on the TV until you find the HDMI input.
