Purchasing a Motorola Qip6416-2 DVR, vs. renting it?

Has anyone looked into purchasing the Motorola DVR, instead of paying the $20/month rental fee?  If so, where did you get it & are you having any problems?

There is currently no way to purchase a Motorola STB of any Model and be able to use it with Verizon's service.

As it is, the QIP line of boxes are specifically for Verizon service, and as such, they can only be used if ordered from us. If you were able to get one from somewhere else, we would not be able to activate the box for it to properly display the channels on your account.

The alternative to renting a Motorola DVR from Verizon is getting a Tivo.

Said differently:

If you somehow acquire a Motorola QIP STB or DVR, it was stolen.  Verizon does not activate stolen DVRs.

If you buy a such Motorola DVR and attempt to activate it, Verizon will say "thanks for finding our stolen property, we'll take it now" and charge you all the normal fees to use it.  And no, they won't refund what you paid for it.

Thanks guys,

Tried several major electronics retailers ... nothing.  And there is nothing on about where to purchase the unit on Motorola's web site.  Stinks that you have to pay $20/mon, just to rent the device.

Now I'm a bit curious as Verizon does charge for unreturned equipment and I'm not quite sure how we would determine the box was owned by someone that is something to look into but I wouldn't advise anyone to not return the equipment

As indicated above, the only HDTV DVR you can buy at retail is the TivoHD.

The TivoHD DVR has a MSRP of $299 and is available for $250 from online retailers like Amazon.com. One of the following subscriptions is required: $12.99/mo, $129/yr, $299/3yrs, or a one-time payment of $399; this subscription includes nightly guide downloads, software and feature updates, and remote scheduling.

On top of that, you need to rent one M-CARD from Verizon for $3.99/mo.  This plugs into the front of the TivoHD to authorize all channels you receive.

There are many benefits to the TivoHD over the Verizon DVR discussed in other threads, but one thing it can't do is FiOS VOD.  No boxes except those provided by Verizon can support Verizon's VOD.
