STB QIP 7216 Not Responding To Remote When TV On

I just bought a new Samsung TV (LN46D630) and using an HDMI cable. When the TV is turned on the Verizon remote (RC1445302/00B) will not operate any STB functions. (Channel, Info, Guide, Menu, etc.) If I turn off the TV the remote is able to change the channel on the STB. (Up / down or enter a specific number) I just switched out the STB but I am seeing the same problem with the new replacement. Also, I have tried using two other remotes proving this is not causing the issue. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Since the remote does seem to work when the TV is powered down, this sounds similar to previous instances of IR interference, where the TV pumps out IR radiation to block the signals from the remote. Research that topic on these forums and you will find many possible solutions, ranging from changing the settings of the TV from intense ones like Vivid, to creating a shield for the IR sensor on the STB. Let us know what you settle on. Good luck.

Your suggestion was 100% correct! After checking the discussion thread under "FiOS cablebox doesn't respond after TV turns on" (02-02-2009 06:21 PM) I decided to cover the TV IR sensor and the STB worked perfectly using the remote. Unfortunately there are no settings on the TV to "tone down" the transmission level. (Confirmed with Samsung) So as a temporary workaround I have positioned a piece of black plastic about two inches away from the TV which seems to be allowing both to work together. I am hoping that Verizon has a later model STB that will permanently fix this issue. Thanks for taking the time to reply ... Your advice was priceless!

As follow-up ... The original solution only worked for a short while. After doing additional research on other forums under the search topic "IR Interference" I found a solution that has been consistently working 100% of the time: I placed two layers of masking tape over the STB IR sensor. (Covering the entire plastic window which displays the time, etc.) While this is certainly not the most aesthetic approach it has solved the issue. I am just overjoyed to be able to enjoy my new TV! I wanted to post this addendum for the benefit of others who may run into this problem. (This may not work for other combinations of TV and STB)

Thanks for posting your solution. I have struggled for a few months with a similar issue. Verizon sent a replacement DVR but that did not fix it. The masking tape worked! Crazy but I'll take it. Thanks again for posting.

Does anyone know how come there is IR coming OUT of the IR sensor (receiver) on the TV?  Does Samsung repeater the received IR for other periperals?  Or, perhaps talk back to the remote for some other reason?  Do other TV manufacturers do the same thing?  I always though any IR interference was coming from the display, and generally from Plasma TVs, or maybe also flourescent backlit LCDs, but this is the first I'd heard of anything coming OUT of an IR receiver!

It doesn't come out of the IR receiver.  The TV screen itself is causing interference.
