To setup my tv tuner, do I have to use a cable from the tv tuner to a verizon box?

No, you need to add a splitter (rated for 5 - 1000 MHz).  One output of the splitter goes to the cable box and the other to the TV cable input.  If you hook to the output of the box you will only get an SD mono audio of whatever the box is tuned to.

The above assumes that your TV has a QAM tuner.  Even then you will only get you local SD and HD stations as well as the government channels.  All the nationals (USA, Fx, SyFy, ESPN, etc.) are encrypted and can only be viewed with a box from Veriozon or a device (TV, TiVO, MOXI) that supports a cable card which must be rented from Verizon.
