What do I need to do in order to get information on cable card for a TIVO box?
Is there any advantage to running the FioS DVR v Tivo?
You should be able to simply order a cable card from Verizon. Verizon has to install it, and you may be told there is a truck roll fee for the installation. There is no fee in reality, and all Verizon Cable cards are now M-Cards, so you only need 1 per TiVo. Cable Card installs REQUIRE A VERIZON TECH TO COME TO YOUR HOME. They cable card cannot be mailed out out picked up from a Verizon store.
The TiVO offers more storage, and the ability to add external storage. You lose the Verizon Program Guide and Video on demand. Beyond that many feel the TiVO is a better product with a better user interface and more flexibility. The cost is a wash. Cable Card rental from Verizon + TiVO monthly fee and Verizon HD DVR monthly fee is about the same.
You pays your money, and you take your choice. There are several other threads compared the current HD Tivo to the Verizon DVR.
if they quote you a fee, don't bother arguing with them or having them double check, a lot of reps have old information and they are going to reinforce the truck roll fee, but when you get your bill there is no fee. If they tell you they are going to mail it to you, just smile and nod and wait for a call to sched a technician drop off.
its unfortunate but a lot of the Customer service reps simply don't know very much about cable cards, and the info they do have is typically outdated. There are some reps that will insist that we don't offer m-cards for the tivo, and only offer s-cards which are discontinued.
YOU don't personally need to know about m cards or s cards, that was just an example of the lack of information many of them have.
So no truck roll fee. they WILL roll a truck despite what any rep tells you. they are roughly 3.99 cent a month
people don't normally buy tivo's to save money, they buy them to add increased features and functionality to their dvr experience. Tivo behaves much better than the verizon DVR box, but unless you're going to take advantage of the extra features a tivo offers then I would just do the verizon DVR.
