Today I purchased a TiVo to replace my existing multi-room HD DVR.  Is it possible to install both on one tv set while I evaluate which to keep?

Yes.

Just use a splitter on the coax to feed both boxes  I'm assuming your TV has at least two video inputs, so you won't need a video switcher.

Your TiVO will need a cable card to access Verizon programming.  Verizon will be happy to rent you one.
