fios guy set up my fios tv with samsung tv last week. everything was fine.

I got a new toshiba tv dvd combo today. have HDMI plugged into HDMI 1. When I power on the TV (and HDMI 1 is selected) it shows "No Video Signal". (audio is fine)

I need to un-plug HDMI and then re-plug HDMI to show the video. When I turn off the TV and then turn it back on. Same thing happens "No Video Signal"and I again need to unplug HDMI and then replug to get the video...

any suggestions? thanks so much!

It looks like a HDMI handshake issue. Check the video settings on the Verizon STB and make sure the output is set to a supported format for your new TV. Are you pluging in your STB HDMI to the DVD or the TV? You may need to plug your STB HDMI into HDMI 1, and the DVR into HDMI 2.

There is a prior post on this issue at:

http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-TV-Technical-Assistance/Toshiba-TV-HDMI-and-HiDef-STB-Problems/m-p...

Or just do this (maybe):

"Thanks for the referral to the DSL Reports Verizon Forum.  I did find the solution to my problem there.  All I needed to do was to go into the menu/settings/video settings of the STB and turn off the SD overide.  Now I can easily switch between SD and HD channels without losing the signal."

saw the old post, and tried the suggestions, but still not working! Should I call FIOS, Toshiba, or Buy.com (where I got the TV)? What seem to be the key problem?

The key problem is that the HDMI "standard" isn't quite standard yet. So you have two devices from different manufacturers trying to adhere to a common method that is still open to interpretation. Don't you just love bleeding-edge technology (5 yrs old anyway)?  I have some similar diffulties with one of my TV's, a Panasonic about 3 yrs old, and have resorted to using the component video cables instead of the HDMI cable. I really cannot see the difference in the picture or sound, so that method works fine for me. I suggest that if you can't find a workaround, do the same.

To get as technical as I can with this, what's happening (with bi-directional digital HDMI)  is that the set-top box is "talking" to the TV and trying to decide what to do to provide the right, if any, output. One of many things being "discussed" by the two devices is for example whether you are trying to illegally record anything. The Verizon box asks the TV to supply a proper response and if it cannot, then the box shuts down and won't send anything. The TV HDMI design must be able to supply the correct encoded reply according to the standard. If it isn't quite exactly what the box wants to see, then "lights out". Don't you just love the digital age? The analog HD component video cable set (not to be confused with composite video) has no provision for any return response (it's one-directional) so it's use is not a problem. The Verizon box does not expect any response in that case and goes on happily content to send its video out to whatever is receiving it. That is why many not-quite-legal digital recording setups use the component video cable interface instead of HDMI. Good luck...

I appreciate your help, but any other suggestions about using HDMI instead of component video cables?? I mounted the TV to my wall, so less cables/wires is preferred.

From what you said, TV itself is fine (so I don't need to call where i bought the TV) and if no good solution here, I plan to call FIOS tech support.

Unfortunately, all a FiOS tech will tell you is that HDMI has problems and to use component Smiley Sad.  This is what they have been saying for some time now as this issue has existed for a long time and been fixed, broken, and sort of fixed several times with firmware updates to the STB.

The 7xxx series boxes seem more prone to have issues.  I originally had a 6416 DVR which worked fine with my Sharp via HDMI.  For an unrelated issue it was replaced with a 7216.  Immediately saw issues with HDMI (on IMG 1.6 - internal firmware and version for STB) and had to switch to component.  When they released IMG 1.7 the problem was fixed for me, but not everyone.

Problem is everyone is guessing.  I have the same issue no video signal but audio is fine and I'm not using HDMI.  It happens on my Standard SET TOP BOX using Composite Cable (RED,WHITE,YELLOW).
