OK so it would keep the device running for half an hour.  Then what if the power is out for several hours?  It just sounds inconsequential.  As long as everything is working, then what difference?  I never record anything.

A UPS is more an advantage in keeping short power fluctuations, which occur all the time, from causing your equipment to shutdown and reboot.

I don't care if it has to reboot.  That's honestly of no consequence to me and doesn't inconvenience me.  I don't need any more electronic equipment in my house.  It's too much.  All I wanted to know was whether it's normal to have to press the power button on the STB itself after rebooting the STB and before turning on the TV.  That's all.

My answer, posted early, is NO.

I missed your earlier post and just read it now.  Thank you.  I think we got off track with this UPS device.

I really should be more specific by explaining what happened when I turned the TV back on after a power blip that had occurred earlier in the day:

The STB QIP-7100 re-set itself just fine.

Then when I turned on the TV, I got a large sign across the TV screen saying "Verizon Fios".

Then the screen went blank.

I don't know if I should have waited longer but at that point, I hit the "power" button on the STB itself and that got the TV playing.  It's a minor thing but I just thought that was strange.

So that's how my original STB question evolved.  So from what someone suggested earlier, pressing the "TV" button on the remote may bypass that point.

I'm going to unplug and plug the STB back in to see what happens.  I am always unplugging it whenever I dust and clean around that vicinity.

Wait longer.  After a reboot a number of screens may appear and the system needs to get a bunch of things downloaded.

My quick test went thru

  • white enter Terminal password screen
  • long period black
  • screen with moving verizon symbol and saying press menu
  • Gray screen with FIOS in big letters (i think it used to be a red curtain) and message wait while system does initial download.
  • Finally normal program was displayed.

There is definitely something wrong.  I just tried it again and let the blank screen stay there for 10 minutes.  Still, the "Fios" initial download sign wouldn't come on until I pressed "power" on the STB itself.

I'm going to call customer service.

OK, I just got off the phone with customer service and the tech support person explained to me what was going on.  Normally if the STB has to reboot, you're supposed to get a flashing Verizon logo sign on the screen asking to press "menu".  I wasn't getting that so instead, I had to power the STB back on.  When you press menu from a menu screen, that's powering the STB back on so in lieu of that, I had to power the STB back on manually, which really isn't a big issue.

(I swear this can make the customer lazy...remembering the days when you would have to get up and change the station manually.  lol)

So I asked if there is still a way to troubleshoot the problem.  I mean, it's a service I'm paying for and everything should be working.  The tech support rep told me he could send over a replacement STB if I wanted him to which is really something I would rather avoid.  But then he offered to reset everything on Verizon's end, which is what he did.  Once he did that and the STB rebooted, that made the moving Verizon logo with "press menu" come back on.

I also had to go back and get rid of this banner ad on the bottom of the guide screen and disable these promotions and recommendations that would otherwise come on.  When I just want to watch TV, I don't need to be bothered with more advertsements.
