FiOS 35/35 no faster than 20/20

Hi all,

Just trying to get what I was told to expect.  Initially I went with the 25 / 25 plan and found it to be hovering at 20/20.  I waited for a month then upgraded to the 35/35 plan.  After two months and a few system reloads, I find that this upgrade to 35/35 porovides no more speed either up or down.  I currently see less than 20/20.  This has been the case since late January. I get the same results running wireless or direct to the modem/router.   Any thoughts?

System specs below:

Win 7 Ultimate 64

i7 980

16GB DDR3

Intel SSD 520

WD 2TB

Gigabyte X58-USB3

ATI Radeon HD7970

Are you sure your seeing the same wired as using a wireless connection.  Speeds limited to 20/20 would be typical for a wireless G connection.

First make sure you are connected using a wired connection.  Then run some speedtests.  To see how your speed is to verizon sites itself run Verizon's fios speedtest   Hopefully this gives good figures close to or better than 35/35.  UPDATE, I see that verizon has chosen to eliminate, or at least hide the FIOS Speedtest, and use the same speedtest for FIOS and Broadband.  That tester gives bad upload speeds although accurate download speeds.

Then try some of the popular speedtest such as speedtest.net.

Note Verizon recommends using there FIOS speed optimizer, but others feel it has a negative result with Visa or 7 where windows tunes the connection dynamically.

Windows 7 dynamically allocates buffers depending upon traffic. The default is nowhere near adequare for 35/35 service, in fact it isn't adequate for 20/5 service. You have to use the Ethernet connection heavily in order to get adequate buffering for 35/35 service. i.e. if you run the speed test several times back to back, you will discover it gets faster each time you run it as Windows 7 increases the buffering.

This is a problem whether you are running wired, or wireless, but is likely to worse with wireless because it is very difficult to get 802.11g past 20mbps in the real world anyway.

That is not normal.  Most people get OVER their subscribed rates.   a 35/35 customer often see's 40 mb downloads.

You may want to run the speedtest at verizon, but make sure to click analysis and then copy and paste the analysis here.

  1. get on a hardwired PC
  2. go to http://speedtest.verizon.net and test
  3. make sure to click analysis and copy and paste the results

I have 25/25 service and Verizon Actiontec Rev. D router, when I ran the speedtest.net today to Ft. Worth (less than 50 miles) I got (download/upload):

Wired - 30.84/24.89 (so I agree, you normally get above your subscribed speed for downloads, plus close to rated speed for uploads)

Wireless - 22.31/15.42 (about the best you can expect I think with wireless G)

I tried, tried, and tried again many more times to run the Verizon speed test, simply will not run. I tried my local area, I tried other areas, I let it try for 20 to 30 minutes, it would not connect at all. I have run the Verizon speed test in the past just fine, but it sure doesn't want to work for me today, no idea why.

Have you tried running it today? Any ideas what the problem might be?

Edit: I think I found my problem with the Verizon speed test. I was using an old version of Java, updated to the current version, and the Verizon test now works. Would be nice if the Verizon test would give me a clue as to why it would not run, but then again, this is Verizon software I am talking about Smiley Sad

I just tried the Verizon speed test as well as the Speedtest.net test.  Both are approx the same.  I have to admit that when I tried before on the "wired" connection that was from my work laptop which is locked down so many ways.  So I ran a cable to my main PC and ran the test again after updating the "Limit Reservable Bandwidth" setting to "0%" since it defaults to "20%".  Rebooted and tested again.  This is what I found:

Wired = 38 download

Wireless = 20 download.

Wireless showed an increase that may or may not be attributable to the updated setting for bandwith limits.  But definately looks like I am limited on Wireless G.  Wonder if there is an adapter out there that can perform better.  Going to start looking and thank you all for your suggestions.  Everyone that chimed in had a valid point.

if it's wireless and slow, then you may get better performance by simply changing the wifi channels,  so maybe give that a shot before investing any money in a wireless N router.   Wireless N routers are pretty inexpensive and pretty easy to connect to the network.

to change the wifi channel, you can do that in the router.   open a browser, and go to http://192.168.1.1

user name is admin.  and the password is most likely the serial number found on the service tag of your VZ router unless you changed it. Once you login succesfully, go to the top and hit wireless, then on the left basic security.   then go to option 3 which is channel  1, 6 and 11 and are the only channels you should try.

So it will likely be set to auto, change it to 11 and put the check for keep settings even after reboot (Directly under the channel) and then hit apply.  after you hit apply,  test your connection out, if you notice a difference, leave it like that until the problem happens again, and if it happens again, go back into the router, and try channel 6,     test it out.  and then finally 1 if the first two don't work.

Also take a look at page 2 of Actiontec's Wireless PDF File.  It gives you some idea's with regards to position and orientation of where the router sits and how it can best be positioned for maximum coverage.

Yeah coverage is fine, this PC is only about 8' from the Verizon router.  And coverage in the rest of the house is fine with the laptops, TV's and BluRayplayers.  I will try another channel later this evening.  Thanksa gain for all the assistance.
