Intermittent Connectivity to specific server/ip.

I've seen a few posts that seem to point at the peering from verizon to alternet, saying that verizon even owns alternet. I'm on verizon FIOS in MA and the server is in NY.

Started about a week or so ago, I can't always stay connected playing a game, FTP, or making other connections to this particluar server(Other users around the country are fine).  I can use a VPN to get to another net work, which doesn't go over the same route and, surprise, it works fine.  Got on the chat with verizon and they tried to claim that after the 3rd hop, it was not their problem. Then they reset my router to change my IP (it didn't), then they insisted the problem is with the destination server and their "BOGON" filters.

I filed a ticket with the host (vilayer) and they politely said their network, filters, etc are fine. Here's a traceroute:

Looks like live chat is only until 5pm ET, so I'll get back on with erizon tomorrow.

Any words of wisdom?

Read through this and see if it can't help you change your DNS server yourself, as well as finding one which will be best for your location:

I'm not a network expert, but DNS is only for name resultion. IMO, the problem at hand seems to be a routing issue. Googling "verizon fios alter.net" yields way to omany results of people seeing problems across that route. If I ping it 10 times, maybe 1 or 2 fail. That can't be right.

Anyway I am using google DNS.

Finally, I was able to get a ticket opened with verizon and it was guaranteed to be fixed last night 9/25 @ 9pm. Of course it was not.  I'm going to try contacting them again, but I'm thinking the end result is switching to charter - at least we have that choice.

You are not showing any problem within verizon or alter.net.  You are getting to talia in 17 ms which is okay. Its normal to see some servers that refuse to respond to pings.  I.e show * * * Request timed out. .

thanks. I was afraid that I knew enough to not fully understand the issue. I wasn't 100% sure of what the traceroute meant.  When you google "verizon alter.net" you do seem to get many other posts similar over the last few years.

With that said, I still have connectivity issues and I can lose 2-3 pings out of 20 sometimes. I'm definitely seeing problems connecting to the server (its a game server), that I didn't have a month ago. As far as I know ,its just me - others can connect just fine and theres been no change in their experience (they are with other ISPs aournd the country/world).

Verizon says its not on their end and the server host says its not on their end. Any ideas on what to ask each of them or test or try to see where its happening?
