Parental Controls

It doesn't appear that Verizopn is really that interested in helping parents control what content is allowed in the house.  It is impossible to set  the parental controls for fios customers - so deeply imbedded I can't find them.  When I did the control were completely inadequate.  I have to think of every single word or website to restrict the content.  I don't want to restrict every website only some of the material on these websites.  For example YouTube - some materail is fine others is completely unaccepatable!

The controls  can be foud on the top bar of the router login page. Verizon doesnt want to do it because if not done right sites you want will not work. The settinga are basic and tell you to look for software to do anything more advanced:

Note:While these basic Parental Controls are a great way to limit access to particular sites, there are other computer software applications that provide computer Monitoring and computer Content Cleanup. Monitoring involves keeping records of the computer user's activity for later review. Content Cleanup involves scanning the actual content of websites, emails, and attachments for specific words to block or for spyware, popups, adware, etc.

Check out OpenDNS.  They have a free service that blocks access to websites based on categories such as "porn," "nude,"  "adult," and many more.

In order to use OpenDNS you need to create a free "OpenDNS Home" account.  Then, you need to change the router to use OpenDNS's servers instead of Verizons for DNS.  Once that's done, any device connected to your network will be subject to the filters you control at the OpenDNS control panel.

Yes, there are ways a tech savvy user can get around this.  Keep in mind that if your kids are tech savvy, chances are good they'll find a way around most roadblocks you create.  Sometimes the best approach is limit computer use to common areas of the home.  In short, technology is a supplement to good parenting, not a replacement.  OpenDNS is a great aid for those of us who have to fight these battles.

Oh, using OpenDNS typically results in a faster Internet experience as it's servers are very fast.  You can use OpenDNS without the filters and without an account if all you want is faster DNS lookups.  Start at OpenDNS.com.

Good Luck.

I'd like to use Family Shield (open DNS), but the router user name and password provided by Verizon are not working.  I do not know if many years ago I reset a username and password for the router.  We just upgraded with 99 dollars to the new actiontec router.   If you type one letter into the password box, then 3 dots appear.   Can anyone help?

Now I am at:

Login has been temporarily disabled due to too many unsuccessful login attempts. Please try again later.

What are the default user name and password for my Actiontec MI424WR router? The default user name for the Actiontec MI424WR router is "admin," and the default password is "password" (do not include the quotation marks).

  • Note: To improve security, your router password may have been changed to the serial number of your Actiontec MI424WR router if you hadn't previously changed the password from the default of "password." You can find your router's serial number on the label affixed to the bottom or back of your router.
  • If you reset your router to the factory default settings, the router password will return to "password."

The user name and password are both case-sensitive, so be sure to enter them in lower case.

The "3 dots for every character typed" is intentional, it's "security thru obsfucation" and is meant to keep shoulder-surfers from easily seeing how many characters in your password. Lame, I know; but not a trouble.
