Why does Verizon block some websites?

Using comcast (or a proxy server), I can browse exdesi.com (IP: 93.190.140.79). Why does Verizon behave like the big brother and block it?

I just went to that site just fine via FiOS internet. However, I use OpenDNS for my DNS, that may be why I can get there and you can't. But other than possibly it not resolving via whatever DNS you are using, it appears to me that Verizon is not blocking that site. What error message are you getting?

Hi Justin,

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Browsing these boards, I discovered the tracert tool:

Well, yes, maybe it helps.

First, from the tracert is clear you are getting well outside Verizon's network before it fails. It fails at the last hop; I tried looking up the IP address associated with it, I am not sure what all the info means but it appears the owner of that IP address is in the Netherlands.

My guess is that for some reason traffic from your IP address is being blocked at that point. Verizon has recently acquired some new IP address blocks, perhaps the one you are on is being blocked because it was previously used by a spammer or some other bad guy. What IP address block are you on, do you know?(don't provide the entire address, just the first two parts: for example, I am on 173.74.x.x right now, it occasionally changes). If this is the problem, I don't think there is any way for Verizon to fix the problem, the administrator at the site where you are blocked needs to update their "bogon filters" (I think that is the correct term). Here is a link to a thread that discusses this and I think pretty much describes the same problem as yours:

Hope this helps.

I would have to agree with Justin, It would look like your IP/IP range has been "black Listed" by the web site. I have run into this many times. It is very hard to get off a black list once on it. Last place I worked I ran into this issue sending emails to AOL, Verizon, Yahoo, and all major ISPs. I had to contact them directly and tell them, we owned the IP now and asked to be un black listed. After a long time convincing them of that, it look another month for all the systems to be updated to unblock it.

I would suggest trying to contact the website directly to see if you can get it unblocked. If they don't, you can always call Verizon support, but I don't know how far that will get you. I think you have a better chance contacting the site yourself.

Posting a IP like this is fine, potentially thousands of people have a IP that starts out at 71.112. A 71 address is a class a IP address and can be subnetted out to so many possibilities.
