FIOS STB on EBAY

People continue to see them on EBAY and rip people off. Has Verizon contacted eBAY to say that these should not be sold?

Or does Verizon contact sellers to tell them that the should not be sold?

Sellers try and weasel out by saying you should contact Verizon before buying to see if it will activate. But I thought Verizon policy is that they will not activate any STBs that a customer has purchased.

As far as I know there is no way to legally obtain any FiOS capable Motorola or Cisco Box, I believe under current law, if you could obtain such a box legally, Verizon would have to rent you a cable card to make it operational. However there is no source for legal FiOS capable Motorola or Cisco boxes.

As it stands I believe only 3rd party Cable Card devices such as PC tuners, the Moxie and the TiVO  DVR boxes are the only 3rd party equipment that will work with FiOS TV, and you will have to rent a Cable Card for them from Verizon. While the Verizon rep may tell you that you will have to pay for a Truck roll for installation, that is not the case pursuant to current FCC rules, and I know of now Cable card user that has actually had to pay for the truck roll. Cable Card require a Verizon Tech to install, no matter what the Verizon Sales rep may say.

I have no doubt Verizon has contacted eBay, however enforcement on the eBay side tended to be 'sloppy' at best.

Caveat Emptor...

The boxes that are sold on EBay are, technically FIOS "capable". However Verizon will NOT provision them.

That is true because technically the boxes remain Verizon property and the purchaser has really purchased a stolen box (in Verizons eyes). That is why Verizon will not activate them. There has been other threads on these forums in the past where Verizon has said they do on occasion work with eBay on getting the auctions shut down. But as the other poster said, eBay is not overly efficient at shutting those fraudulent auctions down.
