HDMI Connection Handshake

I'm helping a neighbor whose FIOS TV was not hooked up with an HDMI cable to her HDTV using HDMI cable.  They used component cables, but she needed the component input for her DVD player.  So I bought an HDMI cable and connected it to HDMI input on the TV.  It worked fine for 3 days.  Now she gets "No Signal" on her TV.  Is there a handshake procedure or a reset that restores the HDMI service?  Judging from other posts, HDMI output from the FIOS box seems like a serious deficiency.

If it is the HDMI handshake issue, it can be fixed temporarily by rebooting the stb. Just unplug from electric, wait 15 seconds, plug back in and wait until the clock shows the time. That should bring it back up if it is the handshake issue.  But I agree with lasagne, "no signal" sounds more like an input or loose connection rather than the HDMI.

HDMI handshake usually seems to present itself with an error saying "unusable signal" or a blue, pink, or green screen on the TV.

HDMI being digital is an all nothing thing ... but getting "no signal" and the fact that it was working almost sounds like something more rudamentary ... have you tried a different HDMI cable (borrow yours from your TV which I assume is working fine) and have you confirmed that the TV is looking at the right HDMI input (sounds silly I know, but my TV has multiple HDMI inputs and it doesn't bother to tell you which one you're actually looking at -- and my wife continually manages to change the input which of course results in the "no signal" symptom).

The biggest issues I've seen with the HDMI from the Verizon boxes is not video related, but audio actually.

Just some thoughts on things to try.

Thank you for your suggestions.  I tried turning off the power to the STB and waited for reset, but it didn't help. I switched the HDMI connection to the 2nd HDMI input to the TV and it started working.  My friend is happy again, but I can't explain the solution, and I hope it lasts for more than 2 days since her TV does not have a 3rd HDMI input.  I am also concerned that this forum site refuses to recognize my password and ID, most of the time.  With my first post and with this reply, it would not recognize my ID and password unless I went to my browser, then to Verizon.com, and log-in that way.  Then I could search the forums for the one I used.  I have never been so discouraged by a service provider.

Moving the cable to the second HDMI connection plays out the scenario I suggested previously which is that the TV has more than one HDMI input -- and may not clear identify which input it has selected as active.   On some TV's repeatedly selecting HDMI as the desired input source will cycle thru all available inputs successively.  I suspect somehow your neighbor managed to press this input selection button (either it's one of the active codes on the FiOS remote assigned to button) or on the TV remote itself.

GeneP,

I am sorry you are having difficulty with your forums login.  I have sent you a private message to try to help troubleshoot that issue.

Thank You!

I'm still experiencing the problem of not being recognized when I try to log in via a message link or after clicking on "reply", unless I got to the Verizon site via a Google search, and logged in first.

The signal got lost again after a week of operation.  This time a reboot worked, but it didn't work the first 2 times the problem occured.  A power-down reset is the first thing I try with most digital stuff.  If the problem occurs a 4th time I asked my friend to connect to the component or composite connectors just to see if it's only the HDMI output that lets lost.
