TimSykes, its like 6% however they are growing the marketshare more every month. I wouldnt doubt that they have a 25% share of the consumer (non-business) market by 2011. I'm just making personal observations though.
I can tell you with assurance that Mac install base will never get to 25%. Windows is just to deep seeded into technology. a good 98% of technology is equipped to work with windows. And only a ever small amount is for both OS's. And having used the new win7 OS you will see very little new growth in the new apple install base. The only people that will get the new systems is the current mac people who just are upgrading.

Don't believe the hype of the mac ads on TV. They are doing the same thing Sony does with the PS3. Consistently talk down about the computation because they hold very little market share, and try to make people believe they are not cool unless they get a Mac.

I'm more or less think that they are getting really trendy. It could also be a fad too...as you pointed out. You're prob right...25% is very steep, but they are definitely on the rise. All apple needs to do now is release a couple of budget laptops and desktops and they are golden delicious. (lol)

Apple is know for inflating the price of their hard ware. But with the new netbooks coming out for $400 with windows on them, I don't see apple coming out with the something along the lines of them for the same price. I swear is Steve Jobs pooped in a box they would call it iPoop and sale for $399.95. Or the bundle iPoop w/ "everyone poops" book for $599.95

Tim,

You obvious personal disdain for Apple is tainting your quality helpful posts. Take another look at the market share numbers and look more closely at the trends - Mac's gains are at Windows expense.  Throwing around the usual Mac bashing memes are outdated and stale.  Watch what college students use to see what they will buy later - living in the past makes you look old.  I suspect you also think the iPhone is doomed and the iPod is just a fad.

With what like 10% of you? Like I said Mac is about 10% market, and they have been bounceing around that number for a couple of years.. A lot has to do with the failing of windows Vista, but Windows 7 is much, much better then Vista. I have been in IT as my job for over 10 years now, and my first PC was a apple IIc in 1982. I have seen the PC market flow for many many years. It is my job to watch the flow of the electronics market. So when I give my opinion on electronics and PC's, I am stating from a professional opinion that's watch the market for many years.
As far as the iPhone goes, apple made one big mistake that will hold them back. It is also holding them back in the PC market as well. The want to much control over the software. They should be a software company, Let there software be put on many different. If they did that they would open up the market to them. Until then they will get the people who want to feel "hip" and buy over priced, under preformed hardware.

And as far as "college students use to see what they will buy later". Well in general people will get the same type of PC they use at work every day. And once the  college students get out to the real world, they will see. The IT department will not buy a mac for them to use at work.

BTW I have a google phone, linux based phone. I love HTC phones, they are the best ones out there. I would never get a smart phone without a slide out keyboard.

I like some of those links you got there. I'm not really biased towards any type of operating system (besides WIN XP for business use), it all depends on what you do.

I suspect this thread wil get closed, as it has expanded from the title topic, but here goes anyway:

Like I said Mac is about 10% market, and they have been bounceing around that number for a couple of years.

The first link provided does not back up that assurtion - the "bouncing" has been up for Mac and down for Windows.

I have been in IT as my job for over 10 years now, and my first PC wasa apple IIc in 1982. I have seen the PC market flow for many many
years. It is my job to watch the flow of the electronics market. Sowhen I give my opinion on electronics and PC's, I am stating from a
professional opinion that's watch the market for many years.

I respect your experience and opinion and may have sold you that first PC in 1982, which was several years after my start in technology.

As far as the iPhone goes, apple made one big mistake that will hold them back

They are being held back? The control in software has resulted in a platform that has 15,000 apps, many of which are free.

iPhone had a 327.5% increase in worldwide market share last year and exceeded Windows Mobile last quarter.

Until then they will get the people who want to feel "hip" and buy over priced, under preformed hardware.

Accroding to the trend numbers, there must be a lot of new "hip" windows converts.

Clearly, Windows and the PC have a commanding position that has been built over the last quarter of a decade. The fact is, changes in users needs (internet, web apps) has made the case different and companies like Verizon would do well to look at the trends and offer solutions that reach as many as possible. Cheers.

Charles:

Thanks - your response in early December 2008 gave us Mac users some hope.  What's the status today?

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response.  I tried the link and got an error message.  Is there another address that can be used?
