"DUI" message after adding audio receiver?

Hi,

I've had Fios TV for sometime now, and until recently have an HD STB connected directly to my TV via an HDMI cable.

Recently, I added an audio receiver into the mix.  My receiver is a Denon AVR-790.  My setup now is that the HD STB connects to the receiver via HDMI, and the receiver connects to the TV via HDMI.  It pretty much works, but with some odd behavior at startup.

If I startup the TV, receiver, and STB at the same time, I will initially statr to hear the sound from the last channel I was watching, but then the STB displays "DUI" for a few seconds with no sound or video.  After a few seconds, sound and video come back.  However, right off the bat, if the channel is SD, the video is stretch (despite not being set to be stretched or upconverted).  After a few more seconds if I change the channel or view the guide, the SD channel will go back to its normal aspect ratio.

Everything is normal from this point on, no video or sound issues.

I have noticed that if I startup the TV and receiver several seconds before the STB, these problems are avoided.  It almost seems to me like the receiver takes a few seconds to initialize, and during this time the STB can't fully initialize itself which throws it into a strange, but recoverable state.

It's more of an annoyance than a real problem, but it seems to me like I can't be the only person to have come across this, as this is a relatively normal setup, and I was curious if anyone had any clues on how to smooth out this startup process with these devices.

Thanks,

For others viewing this thread, I figured I'd update as there have been some developments.

To recap -- after adding a receiver in between my HD STB and TV via HDMI, I started to get a "DUI" message when starting everything up.  Additionally, after starting up SD channels would be stretched, despite having turned SD override off.  After viewing the guide or an HD channel, SD override would go back to being off and the streteching would stop.

I didn't mention it originally, but the HD STB was a 7-series Motorola box.

I recently swapped that STB out in favor of a HD DVR, which happens to be a 6-series Motorola box.  After doing this, I still get the "DUI" message on startup, but the stretching issue is resolved.  SD override stays turned off, even on startup.

This may explain why different people have different experiences with this -- it seems to depend on the particular model of STB you're using.

I can live with this situation, the "DUI" didn't bother me, but the initially stretched images did.

Your problem  comes from the looseness of the HDMI protocol. The protocol allows for to much variance in the implementation and because of that a digital "handshake" issues occur. The more HDMI components you add to the mix the more likely you are to have issues. I get the DUI message at every start up and I have HD DVR straight to the TV, however I don't experiance any other audio or visoe issues. Just the meassage as everything intializes.

I have been with Verizon since September and I have gone through (1) HD stb already due to the stb not starting up. I also got the DUI message. And I had an issue over the weekend with the replacement box not powering up but after a few hours it rectified itself.

I believe the issue came from the firmware update on 12/1 that's when I had my problems. That update did fix the issue I had with the HDMI / Samsung 1080i issue that I had but it also took out my stb.

It may be an issue with the HDMI connection with Dennon & Motorola.

That message is a handshake issue, so it's just a hiccup in the way HDMI is delivering to all affected equipment.  if it's more of an annoyance than anything I Would try to live with it.  Mass has seen the updated verizon software so if you are still having problems, you probably won't see any updated software for a while (they don't do updates every month or anything, I think it's maybe quarterly)

anyways, if you want a permenant fix to get rid of it, you have to either try a different hdmi port on your receiver, or get off of it altogether and use component for the video and digital audio or optical audio instead.

SooooooOoO  idk.    if it was just an annoyance I'd probably live with it, but you may be more particular than I am.

MrZeebo, I too have a Denon receiver.  What's happening is that the STB is negotiating with the receiver and not the TV, and the HDMI handshake with the Denon receiver resets the SD override to 480i -- versus the "off" setting that works best for me -- which is what the receiver reports as it's resolution.  (The Denon's internal video output for menus is 480i.)   To avoid this, I've turned off the "HDMI Control" setting in the receiver's HDMI setup area.  Also, I ensure that upon shutdown the TV and receiver actually are turned off.  If for some reason the receiver remains on, then the STB resets the SD Override to 480i, again based on negotiating with the receiver.  It appears to me that the STB will negotiate when it's in the "off" (screen saver) mode, so the next time I turn the units on it has reset the SD override -- but only when the receiver is ON but the TV off.   So my solution takes care of the SD channel "stretch" except for when the Denon receiver is not shutdown with the TV.  I can replicate this situation everytime, so I'm fairly confident about what's happening.

PJL, thanks for the tips.

I do have HDMI Control turned off, and, like you, I have by SD override turned off.

I believe that I am turning off the receiver.  When I power down, I turn off the TV, receiver (goes into it's "standby" mode with a red light), and STB (goes into its screen saver mode).  If I turn them all back on at the same time, I get the SD override set to 480i (until viewing the guide).  If I turn the receiver and TV on ahead of the STB, SD override is off as it should be.

Is there anything else you need to do in terms of turning off the receiver and TV?  Do you have some automated way of solving your problem, or do you just manually turn everything off with remotes?

I have the same issue with my Yamaha receiver. Just last week, I called the FSC and had them generate a ticket. I explained to the CSR that I do not expect him to resolve my issue on the call, but I wanted the issue doucmented. I did mention on the call that I wanted to get the new Cisco STB, to which he had no reply. Smiley Wink

He did document my issue, and gave me a ticket number.

I recommend that you guys do the same. The only way we can get Verizon to try to solve this is to make it known.

I use the FiOS remote to turn the units off all at once.  It is set to turn on the STB first, the TV second, and the receiver third.  You can set the order of turn on per the remote instructions.  Here they are, with the "order" part underlined.

1. Press and hold the

2. While holding down the

3. Release both keys. The Device Keys will blink twice.

4. Press

5. One after the other, press each Device Key you want the Power Key to control in the order you want them to turn on or off.

6. Press

STB key. STB key, press OK. 9 - 7 - 7. The STB key will blink twice. OK when done. The STB key will blink 3 times to indicate success

I have a 6416 DVR with IMG 1.7, and whenever I turn on my receiver (Yamaha RX-V3800) I lose the SD Override setting.

So should I explain to my wife that there is a problem with the receiver, and that I need a new one? Smiley Very Happy I mean, I didn't perfrom any home theater upgrades in 2009.
