Increase DVR storage capacity

To increase my DVR storage I need install an eSATA hard drive which is plugged into the back of DVR

I have purchased an external storage

WD (WD20EURS) WD AV-GP

Sata 2  5400 RPM

Question   Will this hard drive work ?

I have heard that someone added extra storage.

However this erased all recordings on the DVR hard drive

True or not ?

Anyone who has done this please let me know what and how you did it.
