Lost voice mail

My son received a birthday greeting today that he wanted to save.  It has disappeared.  He's certain he did not delete it, but even if he had, he showed me a number combination (1 and 9) that will play erased messages for you.   No message was retrieved when doing that and I verified that the function itself does work on my own cell.  So, where do the messages go once you listen to them?  If it wasn't erased,  and it wasn't saved, how can it be gone?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Lost voice mail

Unfortunately, once the message is deleted and you hang up, the message is gone. That retrieval function for deleted messages is only good until you end the call into the voicemail server.
