All of a sudden, I am not allowed to pay using a credit card.
The system seems to want force me into an auto payment scheme using
my checking or savings account.
Since I have had a very bad experience in the past with such systems, I wish
to pay by credit card each month, not automatically.
However, I cannot find any way to pay by credit card. If I cannot pay by credit
card, I guess I'll have to go back to mailing in a check.

It seems that you are not given the credit card option if you click on "view your current bill at My Verizon."
Only if you click on "You can make a one-time payment using your credit card at myverizon.com." can you pay by credit card.
This should be cleared up, as it had me waste about a half an hour when paying my bill.

In the bill pay section there is an option to "Make a one time payment with another option." If you select that you can set up to pay by credit card. You can set it for automatic payment or a one time payment.
I just used it two days ago, so I know it works.

That's right. I did the very same thing when I was using up the remaining few bucks leftover on my Verizon Rewards Card last year. You can pay your bill however you want.
